Can you take a photo of the other side (driver) of your engine? Your block has the ability to do either a bypass filter or full flow like in today's engines. Take a photo so we can see the side of the engine under the manifolds.

If there isn't a filter on it now, I suspect the P.O. has the motor setup in bypass mode and an external line is run between the 1/2" NPT fittings. You have the option to do either with that engine.
