I can see the advantage of gluing the gasket to the head on some engines as you mentioned. I have tried it on a 216, but had issues with getting the valve cover to seal on the valve cover. These covers have a flange on one side and a very narrow edge on the other side. With out gluing the gasket to the valve cover, it becomes very difficult to get everything to line up.
I tried to use the valve cover to line up the gasket before the glue set up on the head, but you can't see past the flange to see whether the gasket is in the right place or pushed toward the center too far.
