From my place behind the wheel and driving, the noise sounded exactly like what you would hear if you walk past a house where guys are inside, mounting sheet rock using battery powered screw drivers. Short, high-pitched, whirs for the second or so that it takes to drive in a short screw. I am familiar with the sound of impact wrenches. I did not really note the distinctive hammering sound that such wrenches make. But I do agree with you that we are likely hearing the consequence of air being in the system. Nothing else could make such a sound with the truck running otherwise well. They had the tranny out today and I suppose they just did a sloppy job of putting it back together and in the truck. I find myself annoyed about it, since it is clear to me that this noise is absolutely the result of shoddy work from today and has nothing to do with the issue that they have been trying to work out for two weeks already. My guess is that the air will eventually work itself out, but what do I know, I am not a tranny mechanic. I am not a mechanic, period.

Regarding their reference to my "front pump," yes, they referred to the PG's pump as "the front pump." I was a little surprised at that because I have just spent the weekend reading Munroe's Powerglide Transmissions Handbook and in it he says the Chevy Al PG's were rear pumped until 1967. However, I do recall from the invoice I got last week that a "front pump" bushing or seal was installed. So, since I have only owned this truck for a very short time in its long, long life, I cannot say for sure exactly what PG I have. I cannot know if it is the original just as I cannot know how many PG's have gone in and out of my truck since 1965. But this is really not what bothers me now. What bothers me is like what you mentioned, i.e., that now, for the first time, they tell me my PG was not a good candidate for rebuild and to swap in a TH350 (at a cost of "more or less $1200.") after I have dropped like $800 for the rebuild, got stranded 200 miles away on the way to vacation, etc. My nerves are getting frazzled.

I am trying to make a wise decision here.

If you give me the title of whatever good maintenance manual you have for the PG I will find and buy it. I have Carl H. Munroe's Powerglide Transmission Handbook.
