I don't think they ruined it. Like I said it is a good transmission and a competent shop should have no problem fixing it. I haven't worked on one in 30yrs. but they are not complicated and are very dependable transmissions. If they took the pump out and disassembled it, they may have put it back together incorrectly, the pump is 2 halves that need to be assembled right for the oil passages to line up correctly.
