On a truck I used to have the PO had replaced the stock fuel gauge (which had burned out) with a gauge from something else, and used a 10ohm 10 watt resistor shunted across the battery and sender terminals to 'equalize' the gauge to read correctly when used on the stock sender. The gauge was erratic, and read FULL until it was under 1/2 tank... but it worked and I never messed with it.
Now regarding passing high currents to the sending unit, in retrospect I wonder how safe this arrangement really was?
