From my days in the service, you have to remember the fire triangle, heat - oxygen - combustible material, each making up a leg of the triangle. Without all three there is no fire. Remove one or more and there is no fire.
So all said from this thread while there is a combustible material (gas) there is not enough oxygen or heat therefore no fire.
