but I do not believe there is any "hot" lead to the gas tank. The wire from the gauge to the tank is a ground wire with the hot side at the gauge. There is no current flowing to the tank.

i've seen PGE (gas company) mig weld a valve on a 7'' natural gas pipe line w/ gas inside it
NO explosion
cause the ratio is wrong and in this case the pipeline was high pressure ie 175psi
