You need to 'dissect' the inner workings of the fuel gauge and you will understand what Bill was referring too. This system doesn't just pass current to the variable ground (sending unit), it compares grounds...one inside the gauge, and one inside the tank, and positions the gauge accordingly...but you probably already knew that!
