My differential carrier gasket was leaking, so I took it off and used Permatex to make a gasket and installed it. Also reinstalled the axles. It seems that I have now have a larger backlash then I had before my work. It is about 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch. Any ideas how this happened? And suggestions on how to fix it?

What backlash are you talking about? The work you have done would have no affect on anything except the oil leak.

Did you install a new crush sleeve and torque to proper settings?

I did not do anything except take off the differential carrier, put on the gasket and then put the differential carrier back. I made no adjustment. What I think backlash is, is when you hold the axles firm and then rotate the u-joint coming out the differential. There is about a 1/8 to 1/4 of a inch of play.

It seemed less before I fixed the gasket.

Is this the original rearend?

What did you use for gasket material? Did you make your own or buy a pre-made one?

Jeff

The original post says that he used Permatex to make a gasket.

I don't think you should worry about that much rotational driveshaft movement with the wheels blocked.

I have seen a LOT worse, Drive it. It'll last another 50 years just don't "snatch it" when going from forward to reverse or vise-versa.

I'd rather walk and carry a Chevy hub cap than ride in a Ferd.
I can explain it to you, but I can't understand it for you smile
