I don't want to bore you all with my block saga, so here is what I hope will be a simple question. Do you think a standard 327 has enough hp and torque for a 63 C10 daily driver? My 350 block is no good and I have a 327 available now.

Thanks for input.

the 327 will have less torque due to the shorter stroke, but should get the job done.

I once owned a '66 C10 with a 327 and it performed just fine. I bet more of them were sold with 283's than 327's originally anyway.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that the standard 327 was rated at 210 hp with a 2 bbl carb. A four bbl & headers will boost that number significantly. Eighter way it would work well for your application.

Have had a 327 300 hp in my 64 for 23 years now. Back in my younger, heavier foot days it caused the demise of several transmissions, a few rearends, and a number of tires. I have hauled cattle feed, pulled pontoons, and no telling what else with it. The 350s have more torque, but you won't be let down with the 327.

I have a 327 and a 283. Both do just fine. Wouldn't swap either for not doing their job,

Hi there,
adding an aluminum 4 bbl. intake, a 650 cfm carb, and headers should add about 40 extra horses to your engine. 327 is the way to go!

The 327 is a fine engine It is just easier to find reasonable $ parts for the 350

Hi, The magnificent 327 came in these HP ratings (from memory): 210,220,250,270,290,300,325,340,350,360,365,375. I don't think HP and torque is an issue. TerryJ

I'm also dropping a 327 in my 51. Mine came out of a '69 Camero.
The book says it has 325hp but this ones has been overhauld. It's been bored out 60 with new pistons and rings. Crank has been turned rods-10 mains-20 and the crank has been balanced. Up graded cam CS1095R and new bearings, new hyd lifters, exhchange stock timing set for double roller, double hump heads with new Manley valves 2.02 - 1.6 new valve guides and springs Edelbrock High rise intake and a Edelbrock 650cfm 4 bbl carb. Not sure what the new hp rating is. I just remember the 327 was a pretty hot engine in the day. No big block that's for sure but never the less a hot small block. I picked this up for $1200. with around 3k miles on it with a Turbo 350 trany. I checked this eng out before it was pulled. Ran very strong and didn't burn oil. Hopefully I got a good deal on this one. The guy wanted to sell it because he wanted a 427 in its place. I don't know why he would want bigger than he had but each to they're own.

The 327 is a good engine. Once the power bug bites you though you are on your own. I started with a 350 then to a 383. I think you will like the little mouse motor.

If you want a great reliable, dependable and easy to maintain engine the 283 or 327 are great engines. If you are going for horses and torque monsters, build a 350. It's just common sense.

I had a 327 in a '49 that I used to own and it ran great. I have one of the 300hp variety in the '50 that I'm working on now.

63StepSide: I see you are a Jr. Member. Great to see you here. Getting the youngsters involved is the only way we can continue to create and maintain interest in the StoveBolt Page. While we are primarily about inline GM engines we sure are not above discussing a few other types here and I'd guess we all own one or more of them.

But I want to offer you some food for thought Stepside. Consider that the STANDARD engine in 63' was the then new 230 I-6. It did and still does a great job on hundreds of thousands of cars and trucks. So here is the "thinking" part for you...if it worked so well then why would the 327 not work? The answer is obvious.
I'm just yanking you around a little and hoping you'll rev up the greatest engine ever created, the one between your ears.
Thanks for being part of us and please come around often. A lot of great teachers in here but of no value without proper students of which I am so often one.

I'm not sure if there's a more desireable small block than a 327. If you'd rather have a 350 you can probably sell the 327 and buy two 350's for the amount of money you get for it. 350's are a dime a dozen. 327's are harder to come by.

Years ago, we had a '67 Chevy stepside with a 250. Lots of pep. Any of the older V8's (and I'm a huge fan of the 327's) will do.
