What I thought was a 216 babbitt motor for my 49 turns out to be a 1960 vintage 235 with matching period head and modern styled bearings, not dippers. The valve cover, however is not the flat engraved type with the bolt pattern at the base. Instead it has the rounded two bolt style found on the 216 motors. Were these covers interchangeable? The engine number is 3769716 (F82 GM 28) and the head number is 3836848 (GM 30).

Gmcs are longer, a few inches longer. They wont interchange. But some of the rocker arms can be interchanged, just not all of them as the chev valves are at opposing angles while the gmcs are all in a line.

Most of the vendors sell a kit that includes two threaded studs, two acorn nuts, and a couple of rubber gaskets. You simply replace two of the rocker arm hold down bolts with the threaded studs and put the 216 valve cover on to the 235 engine.
The only reason for doing this is to make the newer 235 look like the original 216.

I want to use a 216 valve cover. I want to try to get a "848" head if the existing one on my engine is indeed bad. From what I see on this thread, the "848" head can use a 216 valve cover... is that correct?
This is also my understated, sly way of putting the word out that a guy in N. Ala. is looking for a good 848 head... hint, hint...
