hey guys. I found a 327 for sale. I want to put it in my 65 chev pick up.

The engine came out of a car, will that pose any problems putting it in my truck?

thanks

Does your truck have a V-8 in it now?

The small block Chevy was an option in your truck and externally they are all almost identical so I would not expect any insurmountable problems.

What year is the 327? Or more to the point, does it have early or late heads? If you are replacing a small block in the truck now, your accessories will be mounted the early way if its stock. If the heads are later, which in this case would be late 60's, you may find you need to change how the alternator is mounted and things like that.

Nothing that can't be solved...

Agreed. My 327 is out of a '66 station wagon, and bolted right into my '65 C10 where the L6 was. Clutch pivot mount, motor mounts, exhaust routing were easily addressed. There are lots of options for accessories and drives...I like the look of those new-fangled serpentine systems with the billet aluminum pulleys and brackets.
Good luck.

You could go to a auto salvage yard and get a serpentine system from a chevy V6 or small block and have a stock looking system.

cars and trucks had different cams and intakes, other than that, most later trucks were 4-bolt, many cars were 2-bolt. however either will be fine in a truck.

Like Builder said, get a serpentine system (also get the water pump as they turn backwards from V-belt setups)

WOW, the things we learn on the Bolt. I have anticipated doing the serpentine system on my small block 305......
Would the water pump turn backwards on it with serpentine???

Thanks SCOTT for bringing this up. I would not have even thought about that..... Now I can be "on the lookout".

Solving some problems before they happen...yep, thats the Bolt.

Scott, there were no 327 blocks that have 4 bolt mains. There are 2 different main bearing sizes between the early and late style.

I don't know that the factory did or did not make large journal 327's with 4-bolt mains, but any 4-bolt main 350 block can take a large journal (307 or 327) 3-1/4 crank and become a 4-bolt main 327. If I remember right there were one or two years when Chevy sold large journal 327s and the 307 was available even longer.

So strictly speaking, there could be 4-bolt blocks that are 327s even though they may not have been from the factory.

Buying used 30 and 40 year old motors you really never know what someone may have done...

Regular production 327s were 2 bolt, but I have heard of a few experimantal 4 bolt 327s and maybe a handfull of race prep blocks that were 4 bolt as well. I will admit, I have never seen one in person. As far as 350s go, all 350s from '67 (Camaro only) to '73/74 are 4 bolt main, regardless of car or truck. The '68/'69 302 (block code DZ) was alo 4 bolt. IIRC, '68 was the only year for large journal 327s.

I've got a 4-bolt 305 block, but I had to build it myself. I bought a set of add-on 4-bolt main caps on ebay, and installed them and line-bored the block to fit. I was planning on building an experimental short-stroke engine that was expected to turn around 9,500 RPM with a roller cam and a set of trick connecting rods. The bore & stroke I was planning on using would end up at around 250 cubic inches, and the idea was to keep it wound up and outrun a bunch of 350's on a 5/8 mile alphalt round track. We were limited to a single 2-barel Holley 350 CFM carburetor regardless of engine size, and I figured a 100 cubic inch smaller engine running 1,500 RPM faster that the competition might get some attention. The track changed the rules before the project got off the ground, so I'm still tinkering with ideas on how to squeeze a few more RPM out of the design.

thanks for the ideas guys.

My truck has a newer model 250. the one with integeral intake. The previous owner said the truck originaly came with a 327. The id plate confirmed that. That is why i want to put a 327 back into it.

I dont mind the straight 6. But I want to change it for 2 reasons.

First it came from the factory with a 327, and i want it to be as stock as possible.

second, the 250 doesnt rev as high as a 327. The engine doesnt match the gearing in the diff.

...GEE, THAT SOUNDS FAMILIAR. I hear it from guys with 216-235's and 4:11's all the time. Funny.

Yeah people say it about the six too, but the real issue is that the motor, trans and rear were coordinated for one type of use and trevota and many others are using their trucks entirely differently now.

It makse sense to me that making changes is good.

It just occurred to me: I don't think the 327 was available in trucks 'til '66...not entirely sure.

The 327 was introduced for Passenger car use in '62. Light trucks got a version in '65 for 3/4 and 1 ton only. 1/2 tons got it in '66.
