Just my opinion, but what you describe does not sound "good", at least not to me.

If you want something reasonably noisy when you want, but still pleasant sounding if you drive careful then Flowmaster mufflers would be a good choice.

Had a single one (two into one) put on a 78 IHC 304 V8, sounded pretty good I thought.

I've had louder exhaust, it's fun for a while, but people start to complain...
Flowmasters would be my choice.

I've got glass packs on my '62 Suburban. I think they sound great.
Right now they dump out right in front of the rear wheels...it contributes to road noise I'm sure, but there is no interior in the truck, no carpet, no sound deadening, no weather stripping to speak of, the sliding rear windows rattle, the rear barn doors rattle, wind comes in everywhere (literally...around the doors, around the door glass, and THRU the doors at the window crank hole), nothing on the firewall, and cheap tires that have road noise of their own.
Once all that is taken care of (HA!), I may dump the exhaust out the back below the bumper.
They aren't too loud, and they don't drone. And you can't beat the price.

On my 48 panel I'm running dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. They sound great!! when you step on it they sure open up for a nice rumbling sound. Highly recommended thumbs_up

I had a 64 Impala with glasspacks, when the timing was set right, it would pop off on deceleration. Also used to drive a 71 GMC halfton that had the same set up, same results. I still like the sound of them, especially for the price.

I use long glasspacks (30") on my trucks. They have a deep mellow tone & aren't loud or annoying.

Imposing your idea of what "sounds good" on everyone for hundreds of feet in all directions is rude. It's like the people who think that if they talk loudly that what they say will somehow take on more importance because they're drowning out everyone else's ability to communicate. Ditto on sound systems that blare thumping bass and vulgar lyrics for all to hear, whether they want to or not.

If I can hear your sound system, or your exhaust system with my windows rolled up, during normal traffic, IT'S TOO LOUD, YOU INCONSIDERATE [censored]!

Just my humble opinion- - - - -

i am not wanting it to be too loud.
but i want it to be when i hit the gas or let off the gas it will pop.
(kinda like a small engine backfire)
out of what info i have now i am thinking about what still lookin has said. going with glasspacks.
i heard a 1950 chevy straight 6 216 with cherry bomb 2" straight pipes.
it sounded BAD A$$ and that is what made me start thinking about going with Cherry Bomb.

let me ask this question
will there be a difference in sound with a 6cyl and a 8cyl with Cherry Bomb?

I don't know about when you hit the gass, but if you want it to pop when you let off the gas:
Choose too large of an exhaust pipe that will eliminate good scavenging at low rpm. I'd suggest a 3" pipe for a 235 single exhaust. Get too large a muffler, the flowmasters do sound good, but get one that is sized too large for your engine (get one sized for a big block). Run a single all the way.

I had this on a 4.3L V6. Had a real quiet tone at no load and moderate rpm. Put a load on it and it opened up some (typical flowmaster rubmble). Get off the accelerator quickly and you got that pop pop pop you are talking about.

That should do it. It won't help your performance at low rpm, but will help some at high rpm. Had I wanted to spend the money to redo this exhaust, I would have done it all with 2.5" pipe and a smaller muffler for better low end torque.

Well then, I guess I'm an inconsiderate blankity blank, because I have a classic Vette with sidepipes and a first gen Firebird with a Flowmaster exhaust system.

But you know what, Jerry? I don't care.
What I like is what I like, and if people next to me don't like it, maybe I'll rev it for them.

There is no sweeter sound to my ears than a 235 Chevy 6 cyl with
Fenton Headers and 18" steelpack Porter mufflers. My 248 GMC with Fentons and turbo mufflers sounds pretty good too, but a lot quieter.

Flowmaster 40 series mounted as far back in the system as possible with full length tail pipe is the system of choice for me. I never like Cherry Bombs, even back in their day. I used Thrush back before Flowmaster came along,

i am not sure wha size my engine is but i do know it is a 8 cyl and it is not a 350 or any bigger. i am thinking a 327.
it was the right price from a guy we know so we got it. and did not ask many questions.
when all it needs is a coat of paint interior work and put a wood bed in it for $200 ya cant go wrong.
it the 8 cyl in it is not the original engine.
but he still has the straight 6 (i am guessing a 235 or 292) that we may put that back in it.

Ya know, maybe I was one of those that offended Jerry with my loud pipes. I used to run the Impala and the 71 GMC in the Nashville area. Most folks didn't complain about it except when I fired it up in the mornings at the apartment complex. I had to leave around 5 am, this was all back in the late 80's. So Jerry if it was you, I apologize, but I still like my loud pipes!

I would recommend a set of Flow Masters 2.5", then turn down under the bed. This will give you a deep throaty sound, without being offensive.

A smaller pipe will lend more of a pop sound, not a 3" as suggested earlier. You'll be over-aspirated and like you popped a hot air balloon when all you wanted was a pin to pop Bozo's balloon. Flowmaster has kind of a modern sound, to me anyways. Personnally, I like the rapping of glasspacks much better. Nowadays, I just use 1.5" straight pipes on my 292 out to the bumper. It raps real nice if you get on the gas. V8's sound much different than straight 6's though. Something else you could try is doing a glasspack on one pipe and leave the other pipe straight, no muffler. If it's too loud, just have the muffler shop install another glasspack. I don't know what's up with your motor but, an average old smallblock, wouldn't go bigger than 1.75" duals.
Oh yeah, where the heck is Zabickville, Texas?

Mugsy is right about the smaller diameter pipe, the ones I had on my Imapala were 1 7/8 OEM replacements I found at an old parts store in the mid 80's. They went out of business a couple years after that, sure wish I could have bought out some of their inventory! I used to get all the stuff for my old vehicles and equipment there. They even had the spark plugs for Dad's old Twin City sawmill engine on the shelf, I believe it was made in the early 20's. I know I kinda strayed from the subject there, just came to mind LOL.

Take your muffler off. That should get you the sound that you are looking for. Maybe not what Jerry and his loud .45 wants to hear though! grin

I'm running a dual 2-1/2" Flowmaster system in my 55 Chevy stepside. 350cid V8. It's loud when I accelerate, and rumbles nicely at idle. Compared with all the Harley morons in my area that run straight pipes, my truck is relatively quiet.

I searched and found a set of Vintage straight tin can THRUSH mufflers on E-Bay ..THEY CRACK !
when im road worthy ill be takin it to a retired local gent that does custom exhaust work outta his barn for soemthin to do and have him bend the pipes from the mufflers out to the rear bumper she will CRACK then big time especially down hill when ya drop it down a gear ...LOL

I would just stick some cheap bargian type glass packs on it. When the fiber glass burns out of them, they will sound pretty good...and they are cheap.

Hey Yelowcat,

I listened to the youtube post on that exhaust sound...LOL... I personally don't like a loud exhaust such as that. I don't know what sounded worse, the exhaust or that that terriable squeeky door...LOL...

I had a dual stainless exhaust 2-1/2" tubes with flowmaster's classic sounding mufflers that gave my 33 coupe a nice sounding and respectable rumple without interferring with listening to the radio or someone talking in the car while driving. When you punched it, she sounded real nice and strong. Nothing beats the sound of the flowmaster's in my opinion though, and I like a vehicle that has the performance equal to matched the sound.

There is a megatone muffler out there that attaches to the rear or exit part of the exhaust. It looks kinda like an exhaust tip. They have shims or pacts that you can use to adjust the sound. They sound alot like the exhaust you posted. Something to think about and I think they are stainless.

Just my opinion.

Dave

i gree with yellowcat on the thrush mufflers.i had a 74 c10 with a 350 put a set of headers on it with turbos and it sounded ok. blew one of the turbos up (completly destroyed it dont know what the hell happened)bought a pair of the long thrush, and a 2 1/4 universal dual kit from summit hooked them to the headers ran them all the way out the rear. very quiet under normal use .get into it and it cracked big time ,loved it. was my favorite ol truck.completly used it up. the 12 bolt is now in my 49 so it lives on.by the way i have flowmasters for the 49 still havent heard them yet.....dave

I agree. Although Flowmasters have a wonderful sound, they tend to be kind of tiresome on the highways after a couple of hours. The Thrush mufflers are so nice and quiet when cruising, but open the throttle and they still sound very good. Plus you can't help but love the low price of Thrush turbo mufflers.

I've never tried the knock-off's, (i.e. Summit brand), prefering instead to spend 10 more bucks to get the original Thrush's.

Underdog,

Welcome to "stovebolt"

Just looked at your link on "AERO PERFORMANCE EXHAUST" an it was very interesting technology. I would have loved to hear what they sound like, as Justin posted on the "youtube" link.
