I have a 51.
I'm wondering what the main differences between these bodies are and if I were to purchase one, what the best direction to go would be.

There were also some structural and mounting differences between them and the later cabs.
The '51-53 cabs are identical. The '54 cab has a one piece windshield and a different dashboard | | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 5,708 | MiniD,

The whole fun in the hobby is finding a good project and restoring it and keeping one more peice of AMERICAN made iron on the road for others to enjoy. Not ones ability to shell out chunk of change on the table and recieve a Chinese made Chevy in a box to put together and call a restoration. These are harmful to the hobby, as people will try selling this garbage as the real thing, and eventually the values will crash.

'52 and '53 have push button type. I think the inside ones are interchangeable, although some years had metal knobs and some years the plastic-like ones.

I was at a show a couple years ago and the people puting on the show decided which class you should be in (guess they knew more about my truck than I did!). Anyway, they put my '49 in the streetrod class. A guy came up and started jumping all over me "'cause a '49 ain't a streeetrod"! I asked which one was his. He said his was the some 30's model Studebaker pickup. So I casually said, "Oh, the kit car." He didn't say another word, just walked off. The guy next to me was laughing and I sid to him, loud enough for the kit car guy to hear, that at least mine was the real thing. Not some new one bing passed off as an old one.

I have a 66 chevelle that was saved from the scrap yards with $18k in body work. Most of that steel came from china. There's nobody in the U.S. making replacements and some parts just rust on all vehicles after 50 years.
Everyone one of my cars will be a solid rust-free driver when I'm done with it. Some will be more original than others. I won't care one darn about that because I bought the car for the styling and simplicity, not because it strokes my ego.

But the rest is American steel - although a bit thinner than original. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall | | Moderator: Welcome Centre, Southern Bolters, Legion Hall Joined: Dec 2001 Posts: 14,522 | Most companies charge "what the market can stand" so if those of you who have deep pockets would you hold off buying one for a while so the "market price" will come down to where us po folks can afford one .....if I ever do!!! You get no doors, fenders, or hood. Mostly anything orignal you have wont fit this cab with alot of playing around, drilling hole, and make parts work with the new stuff. For what there asking, any body shop could fix your orginal cab, and paint all the your other sheet metal, and you may still have some money left over for some of the other parts you want. Now that we're at this stage in the game, we can tell you excatly how much it would cost you go all the way down and back. I quess a person would just have to decide what you want to end with. I think until that cab gets down to around 4 grand we can still bring a bad one back cheaper. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 | If they are built in China they can keep em. With that being said, when a person buys a finished truck (much less a trailer queen)they have no respect of what the builder of a quality project has gone thru to bring back a part of history especialy if it was kept all origional. And please don't get me started on car clubs that show "trailered queens" and attend with a "you vote for me I'll vote for you" what a disgrace to an orginazion and the orginaziers that allow it. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 17 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 17 | There is no shortage of podiums over here, I see.

I just do and buy what I can afford. 9K is too steep for me. Could buy a nice, clean, driver for that. Seems there is still a lot of 1K, 2K pickups out there that are rebuildable. I think places like Southern that are going to sell new (AD style) trucks need to start with these new cabs for production. They are not for the low buck hoddy guy that just wants to rebuild old trucks. I'm with robin58, I have no problem with new cabs/chassis as long as they are labeled what they are, "kit car" sounds a little cheesy, but I guess they are. But again I'm not telling anyone I have "kit car" parts on my truck.

Heck this truck hobby is expensive enough without adding a car note to it. If a guy buys a truck already done- well thats ok with me-I dont see that any different than buying his daily driver, but 9 large for a chinese cab? If someone has that kind of scratch in the bank they need to hang with me! Them southern trucks coming out go for like 40-50 large. Not a bad lookin ride either- but not for me- too much money- but if sales pick up and the new owners wreck em we may find one in a boneyard with all that nice new drivetrain and stuff on it...Hmmm now that sounds good.... | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 | Is there any links to this truck cabs site? If all of these parts were made in America, your truck, when finished, would be Barret-Jackson priced. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Dec 2005 Posts: 200 | Better deal here Includes all glass and trim, as well as dash and guages etc... | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 262 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 262 | I could go on and on on this subject. The couple problems I have with someone buying one already done is that most of them have no respect (for want of a better word) for the car or truck. Prime example is a Mustang I saw. The vanity license plate read "R 401K". I thought "How sad! It's nothing to him but an investment." The other is most "Buyers" look down thier noses bigtime at the guy who builds it himself- the "Builder"! Without us, where would they be?! You see who they turn to when something konks out on them.

If the guy did it himself then its his choice to ride it than drive it. I can deal with that. The ones that get me are the deep pocket guys, and we have some around my neck of the woods, that BUY it then talk about it like they did it. I had much rather talk and spend time with the guy that still has grease under his finger nails parked next to me. He gets my respect and although his truck/car may not be a "best of show" he is definitely just as proud of his accomplishments...and I'm proud of him to. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2003 Posts: 2,953 | I know this might be a bit off topic but it does refer to kit cars or the new kit trucks. In this province the special vehicle groups are lobbying the government run insurance company to let kit cars be classed as collectors and get the very inexpensive insurance. The big stipulation for getting any collector insurance here is that the vehicle has to be mint. My 49 has its share of paint blemishes and chips and to me its a classic. But because of its scars the government will not accept it in the collector classification but on the other hand if the 2006 built 1932 Fords with SBCs and fiberglass bodies can be called collectors why can't mine. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 3,068 | I don't know about the rest of you but if I had the money, I would buy every vehicle instead of building them. Of course they would be to my liking or built to my spec.s and I would stay away from the "wanna-be's" like the Southern, but I don't see how we can build our trucks without the aftermarket parts. I would rather polish a finished product than grind the rust off of what's available in my area. If these folks are getting a license from the manufacturer, is that some sort of "stamp of approval?"
I have no problem with there being a $9000 copy cab available. I don't see how it would lower a truck's value because they can't saturate the market with them. (They won't even release a '57 Bel-Air convertible copy stating that the market won't bear it!) Offer the 9 grand cab: a few will buy and build trucks with $50,000 price tags. You won't see a truck that has a copy cab selling for less than $9000, in effect, setting a floor price. Ain't no problem to me.
Whether or not it is "honorable" to take this route is up to the individual.

"Two-cent" Bill Tap..... Tap...... Is this thing on..? "officially licensed by GM only" applies to items or parts with GM logos and trademarks And yes there are some venders that produce US made Sheet metal (ask me I know) not full cabs mind you but solid replacement sections. | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 483 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 483 | Ditto Achipmunk.Problem is most of the trailer queens were bought and proably redone by pro's. I know it takes me and all you others a while to get your truck's and car's show ready, but when you hear these club guys talk about which vihicle they will bring to next weeks show most of the time means they were bought and not redone by them personally. Should be class for trailer queens vs drivers. Sorry guys... I'm not out for a show rig. I'm not out to prove how much better my truck is than someone else's. I just want something that I know is solid and rust free. I'll put the darn thing together myself... but I'm not about to sand blast, cut and weld on the entire cab of my truck just so I can pretend there's something better about the way I do things.
There's just way too much preaching and *****ing going on given the simplicity of the question that started this thread.

Someone posted a link to a new 53 style truck which looked great. Every truck has its own history. If you built it or you earnt it, it gives you a love for that vehicle. Who cares what other people think! I once posted a gripe about buy American and get Made in China. However the badge looks great for the price. I myself couldn't afford the $9K price tag, and if i couldn't rebuild it for less than that i'd find a better one. This site is for restorers, rodders and enthusiasts, so we'll never agree.
