I was drivin the 53 (3 spd, 216) around today and theres a weird noise coming out from under her. It kinda sounds like 2 pieces of sheetmetal perpindicular to each other screeching against each other.

I crawled underneath it, cant find anything loose. Shes done it in the past and it hasnt effected the drive but
Ive never known a screeching to be a good thing? Kinda sounds like it coming from the rear.

No growling, howling, ticking or anything else. Any ideas???

Jeff, I had a similar sound this summer.

My problem was front wheel bearings. I would suggest inspecting your wheel bearings.

Possibly a flywheel cover rubbing the flywheel. Loose baffles in the muffler?

Maybe it's the muffler bearings. JK. U-Joints?

Bigmac, you reminded me Ive got to go check my blinker fluid...

The mufflers rusted out on the inside so Im pretty sure its not the baffles.

The Ujoints dont have that characteristic clunky noise when going from a stop to accel or accel to stopping fast.

It also doesnt do it all the time. It almost seems like it does it more when stopped then accelerating and turning, or when upshifting into 2nd while not quite going fast enough.

If it's repeatable have someone drive the truck over the stretch of road where the noise is heard while you ride in the back listening for the location. Sound can travel and what/where you think you hear may not be the case. Back in the '60s I worked at a dealer who employed a fellow full time to work only squeeks, rattles, wind noise and water leaks. It was amazing how he had the knack for tracking these things down. I remember seeing him hanging out of a car door with his head almost hitting the street trying to locate a sound underneath. Often a customer would complain of a noise "in the dash" that was actually originating somewhere else in the car.

Have someone else drive her, NEVER!

Good idea, although the wife is a little scared to learn the 3 on the tree. I guess its time.

Check body mounts. I had to fix a guys F word when the radiator support rotted out at the body mounts. Caused the cab to flex off the frame giving it a sheet metal scraping sound. Only did it going over uneven ground.

While you're under there, check the bed mounts. I had a similiar noise I tracked back to being a loose bed mount.

It allowed the bed to tweak and squeak in certain situations.

are your brake backings bent into the drum a bit?

possible you have a loose flywheel?

Check the belt/belts and throwout bearing. If that doesn't work, drink a 6-pack before you head out. You won't hear a darn thing.

I had a bad noise going on in my Subaru and I was sure it was the rear diff. So did 2 mechanics. Turned out to be wheel bearings on all four.

Check the pinion bearing. Mine made some noises I might have described the same way as it failed. It quickly got worse.

Hey I'm headed out of town, but you could invite bigmacdaddy over to ride on the back or underneath to listen while you drive it trying to make the noise.

Does this always happen or just over bumps and such? Could it be suspension? I had an elusive noise which ended up being the shackle bolts/bushings. Changed them and it went away.

Underneath I better start working out.

check the bearing in the generator. mine went out and it made a similar sound to what you are describing.

Well, it could be loose/broken fender supports.

rustednuts, the nut holding the pinion flange to the pinion on my truck had worked itself loose on my '58 and was causing alot of vibration and noise, especially at low speeds while accelerating and shifting. No problem at high speeds.

My clutch pedal screeches when it gets used. The pedal is rubbing on the toeboard because my cab mounts are less than ideal.

How are your cab mounts?

So after tearing apart the tranny and rear end, The pinion bearing is the winner!

Totally and completly shredded to pieces, it only has about 8 ball bearings left. I guess i should be happy it lasted a good 54 years now...

I guess its time to order that 3.55 set of gears and enjoy going more then 50 mph. Darn I have to order more parts.
