I've been looking at this little '63 Chevy Fleetside Short Box for years when I visit my in-laws because I kind of like the originalness of it, so I bought it over the phone during these peoples estate auction today. It's a six--which brings me to a question already. I always thought "Stovebolt" was the six-cylinder engine, yet it seems to cover all older Chevy trucks here. What am I missing? Anyway, I'm glad I found you! Nice truck.
The name "Stovebolt" has a very liberal definition on this site.
My father-in-law had a truck like yours in the late 60's. I think it had a 230 engine and was a pleasure to drive.

Stovebolt is a nicknamed given early Chevy sixes because some of the hardware used resembled Stovebolts.
Around here its used a little differently and means any pre-1973 Chevy or GMC truck or pickup, though sometimes someone with an early Chevy car will show up too.
Somewhere there is an official statement regarding what a Stovebolt is at The Stovebolt, but there is no question your '63 fits in.

The Stovebolt Page orignally covered the much older trucks with the inline six cylinder engine... then as I understand it, the old chevy truck book author Tom Brownell suggested that since it was already here that it would be cool if it covered up to 1972 trucks since they had sixes... and at that time in the mid to late 90's when the botl was getting going good, the 1972 trucks were soon to become officially antique... and was the last year of that body style... so, that was decided to be the cut off date.
At least, that is my understanding...

I'm not planning to do a lot of obvious stuff to it. I just want to make it as nice as possible the way it is. I don't really even want to paint it, although I'll have to see how bad the rust is under the "patch" panels they stuck on there to see how to deal with that. Mainly I just want to make it mechanically sound so my son and I can knock around in it or take stuff to the swap meet once in awhile. I was thinking I'd like to have it lettered up to look like it was on there since new with the name of my grandad's car lots he had from the 30's to the 70's in Colorado Springs, but I'd have to find someone that gets what I want to do, and it would have to be pretty unobtrusive. I know some of the rat rod crowd gets old looking sign painting done, so I'll kind of watch for that. There's a lot I could do to it, but I'm not in any big hurry. It has '63 Car hubcaps, but they were as old and gritty as the rest of it. From what I can gather from the history, it must have come with the painted hubcaps, and these were probably on the shelf at the dealer in the little Nebraska town, so they added them to spruce it up. I put the trim rings on after I cleaned up the hubcaps. It drives GREAT! Shifts nice, steers nice, runs good. Unbelievable.
