All new parts, bored .030, TRW pistons, new cam, lifters, reground crank, rebuilt the heads, etc. Drove it a couple years, then wrecked it. Put the motor in '68 half ton short box, step side, drove it a couple more years, then wrecked that. Put it in a '63 Chevy Impala that I entered in two demolition derbies,(didn't win) but had a lot of fun. Then put it in a '63 half ton fleetside shortbox. Drove that a few years, then finally sold the truck (still running great) for $150, back in '86. The motor had a lot of hard miles on it, yet it seemed indestructable.
Someday, I'm going to try and find out what ever happened to it.
John
PS: Both trucks had 6 cylinders, before I installed the 283. Back then it wasn't cool to have an inline. Maybe in a couple years, I will have to edit this post to brag about my straight six.

I know they're popular, but I think there's a reason for that. Damned good engines.
I also like the old Cadillac 331. The first OHV Caddy that came out in 1949.
I have to give credit to the old Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth/Desoto flathead six. I had one in my old '46 Plymouth. One day it popped a freeze plug and lost all the coolant, unbeknownst to me. No Coolant, no steam, Right? I was just driving along and that engine seized. I thought "I'm really screwed now", then I remembered a story that my Dad had told about a '41 Plymouth he had owned. Same thing. So, like ol' Dad, I waited until that engine cooled off, put a freeze plug back in it, a little coolant, and drove her away. It never smoked, rattled, or used any oil. In fact it was still purring like a kitten when I sold it many miles later. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 543 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 543 | GM engines - 350, 327 4-bbl, 427 dual-quad Chevy; 340 Buick, 472 Caddy

as far as smallblocks, i detest the cookiecutter 350. much rather prefer a 283, or a 327. c'mon, 24 mpg with a smallblock? 283, camelhump heads, 2 barrel intake, fuel pressure regulator, 3 spd. i'll take that anyday!
big blocks...eh. i'm a big fan of the Olds 455. talk about a beast.
o. and who can forget the Iron Duke?? 153 cubic inches of pure detroit muscle. hells yeah!

To acwhite, 53 was the last year of the Buick straight eight, 54's were all V8's darn it. These old inliners were used on irrigation pumps, saw mills and on oil rig sites in numerous ways and were granite solid old engines. So many good ones, and who can name the really sorry ones along with their "good" choices. Do I hear 4-6-8 Cadillac?

Much as I hate to say it in the circle of friends I run with though,my all time favorite is the Dodge 383 Interceptor I had in my old Power Wagon. That thing would pull like a BIG big block and rev like a smallblock,it was an amazing engine. As long as we're talking 4 wheels.
But...
The best engines I've ever owned have been in Goldwings. These things just don't quit. You can ride it like there's no tomorrow, put it away wet and do it again tomorrow. They'll easily do 200,000 miles. You'll have to replace the seat, shocks, wheel bearings, etc. but you won't wear that engine out. I really like the old "Bulletproof 3800", a GM V6 that comes in cars (like the Bonneville, for instance). Those engines will run to 300k before they start acting like they're tired, and you can usually get 400 out of them before you have to rebuild them. That is, so long as you take care of them. I love inline 6 cylinders, especially Chevy 216 and 235. They are so simple, functional, dependable, smooth and balanced..... next I would say a 318 Dodge then a Buick Straight 8 (we had one when I was a kid) :p
