This engine is listed at $1480 or so + shipping and has 3 yr. warranty. I'm also looking at a rebuilt 327 on Ebay (110141024139). Frankly, I'm tired of messing with my 305 engine and don't care to start with another "oh, it's a great" used engine. What do you think? | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 2,384 | Try your local Chevy dealer, they carry the same engine, no shipping. I have installed many of them & own one also, no problems w/any of them. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 | | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | Great way to go. I sold hundreds of them when I was in business. I have them in both my pickups now. Like Fleetside says, shop around a little. The larger dealers handle them & the small buy from them. There is no set price. They have a new 290 horse version out that sounds interresting. I may try that on my next one if it,s a manual trans. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. The car club has given away about every version you can think of up until last year when we gave away the H.P. version with rollers, aluminum heads etc. In our area the local dirt track boys have classes that run nothing but crate engines and the ones I talk to say they are holding up very well. And, as mentioned above give "uncle General" (chev dealer) a look before buying else where. If you know someone you may even be able to get a discount. | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | I bought a 350 HO 330 hp crate from a local Chevy dealer. Did you know they really come in a crate? It came ready to crank and run with all the bells and whistles. In checking prices on carbs, starters, water pumps, ect. it was cheaper to just get the "whole enchilada".

I am thinking of putting one in my 57.Nothing fancy, just a basic engine. I don't need 400 HP, just a cheaper basic motor. 1957 Chevrolet 1/2-ton Stepside LB in the Gallery My Photobucket shots The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) | | | | | Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 Master Gabster | | Master Gabster Joined: Oct 2006 Posts: 4,983 | Check out the link below. My crate ran a little over 4,000 but it had the serpentine belt system with air, pwr steer, alt. The options start with a short block and work up to ready to run. http://www.gmperformanceparts.com/

There are 2 dealers in the K.C. area that have specialty divisions for the Goodwrench parts. They deliver to a wide radious. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Will I have a 3 YR./100,000 mile warranty or a 1 YR./30,000 mile warranty? | | | | | Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 Riding in the Passing Lane | | Riding in the Passing Lane Joined: Jun 2004 Posts: 8,597 | The 3 year warranty is for installation in the exact model they were specified for. I believe it is 73-85 cars & 1/2 ton trucks. Any other application it is 1 year. If you put the standard one in larger than 1/2 ton it is not warranted. I don,t even worry about the warranty because there is a very slim chance you will need it. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. It came from Jegs, delivered for $1560. It was actually more at the local dealer with the tax added. I also installed one a couple of years ago, both run great, I highly recommend them. Fred

So here's one for a possible tie breaker. Get the GM crate motor, the 350CI 260 or 290 horse. The 260 horse is far more power than a 305 could hope to be. (I'm not knocking the 305's they have their place too.) The 260 horse $13xx ish and the real trick is beating the shipping and t&%. I suggest combing the internet (Spelled GOOGLE) searching for the part number which you can find at gmperformanceparts.com. Be sure to contact your local GM parts dealer, they may have something they want to move. I finally landed my best deal at a local speed shop, yeah, it surprised me too. Good luck. PS When my 283 gives it up, I'm getting the 260 or 290 horse GM crate motor without a second thought. | | |
