I'm looking for some help in setting up my 350 engine (1991) with a carb and manifold (I chickened out on the TBI for this truck).

Can anyone tell me what the best carb and manifold setup would be for a good, stock driver with a 700R4 transmission (1991)?

I don't know the difference in the types of manifolds or which carb will work best with the TV cable on the 700R4 (I was told by another guy that some of the carbs are not set up to connect the trans cable).

Thanks in advance for the advise.

Carl

You're probably going to get a lot of opinions on this one - here's mine: for good mix of performance and economy I like the Edelbrock Performer manifold and Edelbrock 650 carb. I'm not sure about the TV cable hook-up but a call to your friendly parts man should clear that up.

I am with Waldo on this one. That is a very good combo for a reliable nice running setup. Bowtie Overdrives in CA makes a kit for the tv setup to give correct setup on carbs for the 700r4.

I used an Edelbrock performer intake, a mid 70's truck 350 Q-jet w/a 85-86 Qjet baseplate, used an 85-6 TV cable & manifold bracket, works like GM. Brian

IM) there is no direct relation between the transmission you use and the induction system. It depends on how you want to drive it and how much HP/torque you engine will develop. I have a 350 SBC built with edelbrock components including cam, manifold, timing set, and 650 carb.

I agree with the guys above except on the 650 carb. If its a stock engine or even mildly modified a 570 will work fine and emissions will be better ( if you have to deal with that).

I have built 2 like that. I use the Performer manifold & Q-jet carb. but unless you can o-haul & fine tune the Q-jet yourself you are better off with a Performer carb. they work good right out of the box & are easy to fine tune. Kits are available to hook up the cable. The cable must be right for the trans. to work right & last.

My 350 HO crate came from GM with a Holly carb. I plan on using that with the 700R4 tranny that I've ordered. I'm assuming it will function adequately if I ever get it running. grin

I'm running an edelbrock performer with an electric choke 1406 (600 cfm) carb on my 283 in front of a 700R4... it works well, other than the tranny is shot.

Another quality post.

We will be breaking in our 350 zz4 crate engine with a 650 speed demon carb tomorrow morning. We are also running a 700 r4 tranny. Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks for all thge input. Please keep it coming - especially the follow-up on the tests.

Could any of you that have a similar set-up send a few pics of what you have done and what it looks like?

I am leaning toward a performer manifold

Thanks again!

I built a mild 350 with a performer intake, I'm planning on starting the truck with a 600 holley. Summit racing sells corrector brackets for the tv cable. Good luck

running a 350 with a performer intake, and a 600 eldebrock carb. Switched out the 350 tranny for a 700R4. To get the cable to work I bought a kit from local Southern Rod Shop to get it to work. Then me and the tranny guy spent about 45 minutes driving, setting, driving, setting the cable until we got it to where "I" liked it.

It may be worth noting that a TVcable bracket that I found on off a 350 truck would not bolt onto the eldebrock intake. So it may take some looking to find one just right. Next I'm told that the 700R4 will not shift correctly if the TV cable is not hooked right at the carb meaning the cable may be pulling before its suppose to. I then called JEGS for the "linkage' to make the arc correct when giving it throttle and the tech guy there, well, didn't know what he was talkng about and lets leave that at that!!
The bottom line is to think this thing through and do it right before spending your hard earned money. There is different kits out there and thats because there are different carbs. Keep us posted and let us know how you come out on this.

Carl,
Just speaking for me...
Speed demon, Holly, Q-jet, and especially Edelbrock, You might as well put a garbage can on top of the engine ! all they are good for is BURNING gas, Go ahead and go with the TBI It's not as hard as your think it is, Ive installed TBI on both of my trucks. No problems ever ! There's also a electric Trans torque lock up plug on the side of the newer 700R that's controlled by the ECM but Ive seen a few companies that offer a kit for that as well...
http://www.southernrods.com/categor...n/lock-up-kits/products/product-632.html
or
http://www.jetchip.com/products.asp?pid=14475

But... If your set on using a carb it's like Zipper said... "Bowtie Overdrives in CA makes a kit for the tv setup to give correct setup on carbs for the 700r4" or summit & jegs
Just make sure you got the TV cable adjusted right as everyone has said

Good luck and keep us posted

Todd

I recently changed the 350 Turbo in my 49S10 to a 700R. I have an Edelbrock carb. You need to buy the bracket that bolts on the carb where the accelerator and TV cable hookup. TCI and several others sell them. It changes the arc of the TV cable to be the correct distance. My tranny guy had me set the TV cable by doing the following:

With the throttle cable hooked up and "at rest" pull the TV cable until a resistance is felt, then pull 1/2" more and hookup. It seems to shift fine. I also used a Lokar bracket for the TV cable that bolts to the back of the carb. Good luck.
