Hy starsfan, just to eliminate one more thing, remove the tach wire until we find the problem. Check the fixed point to see if it's grounded, there should be a wire between the point plate and the distributor housing, this is required because the point mounting plate moves with the advance mechanism. With the points open and the ignition on, you should have current right down to the movable point. Hope that helps.
