Since RED65STEPSIDE asked about his 283, I would respond that he is probably on the right track. I don't know about the specific cam he has picked out. I would suggest that if you are going to build a 283...keep it simple.
Keep the carb on the smaller side, choose an RV cam, and bore as needed (don't bore it out just because). A stock HEI ignition would be fine. Run some 2 1/2" ram horns and a dual muffled exhaust. It will last a long time and run great.
If you want torque or horsepower, build a 350 block and stick your money into that instead. You can still find 350 blocks for $40-$150.
