I remember reading about a Formula 1 driver (I think his name was Arton Senna) dying because his welded steering shaft broke while he was going through a turn at 190 mph. He had the crew cut and weld the shaft to make the car more comfortable for him. He hit the wall; then a piece of the suspension went through his body and killed him.

Now I don't think any of us will ever be going 190 mph in our trucks--unless we drive off of the Grand Canyon smile --but I still think it would be better to get a tilt column and adjust it for your comfort, even if it does cost a lot more money.
