If the splines prove a challenge for him you could see what he says about running a square or hex broach thru the wheel and milling flats on the shaft to match. I looked at the seat,wheel, and column on my 52 and thought that guy must have awful skinny legs to make that modification work though. I think you'll definitely need a smaller wheel. Good luck.
