Just had to throw in my "steering failure" story. My brother was driving a 55 2nd series on the farm (circa 1970) when the wheel went slack in his hands.
A tie rod fell off, and the old bolt drifted gently into the bar ditch, did a slow roll and landed wheels down. Thank goodness my brother held on and did not get tossed out.
Low speed + a tough old 'bolt + guardian angels working overtime = no one hurt and the 'bolt returned to service.
