Regarding generator to alternator conversion, I don't see the point unless you are adding electrical equipment like sound systems, HVAC, etc.

The most important thing to do with a generator system is to make sure your battery is always at full charge, and that the generator and VR are working properly. Assuming all your cable connections and wiring are up to snuff, there are very little problems with these systems.

I've been driving my 1956 Cadillac as a daily driver for 20 years with its original generator. It's been rebuilt once and I've had to replace the brushes twice. My mom has been using her 1964 Galaxie 500 as semi regular transportation since 1989. It too has a generator that is perfectly adequate for the car's needs.

I recently had the 6v generator on the '50 Chevy truck rebuilt . I purchased an new, 6v American made regulator as well. Made by Regitar. The only difference is that GM changed the design of the VR cover in 1956 (I think) so that all 6v and 12v regulators share the same cover. The early 6v covers have a different bolt pattern so I couldn't install the original cover on the new regulator.
