I'm not sure what is going on, but it would probably be easier now to do as you say and just install a new set of points and condenser. Putting a new coil on wouldn't hurt either. Because you don't have the bypass wiring in place, a internally resisted one would be much more simple to install. Std Motor Products OR Carquest coil # UC-15 would work fine.
I think new points gap between .018--.024! Give it a try and keep us posted. Good luck.
