If you ground the field and the generator still shows no charge on the ammeter, it isn't conclusive that it is the generator...it could still be the regulator. If you attach a small jumper from the A (Armature) tab on the regulator to the B (Batt) terminal, you bypass the current regulator and cut-out relay inside the regulator itself and connect the generator directly to the battery. If this test shows a charge on the ammeter while merely grounding the field wire showed NO charge, the regulator is defective.

Remember that with a generator, you must speed the engine up slightly to produce a charge.
