Dave,
When you attach the meter between the coil - and ground, you should see the voltage fluctuate between zero volts and about 9 volts or so, as the points open and close. This should show you that the coil isn't open, and that the points are actuating as they should. I really wouldn't hurt to check the point gap while you're hanging out near the distributor.
