Meaning it's okay to try and start the engine without it, but needs to be replaced before use - He doesn't want dirt (sand) getting in the gear.

Thanks for the clarification! I don't think I'll be driving this any time soon. Assuming that I can get the motor running, I have to address the issue of the brake pedal going straight to floor. I think I might have to name the truck Fred (Flinstone...foot brakes)!
