My name is Brian from Raleigh, NC. Just picked up this truck from a lady down the street who was going to scrap it. It's a 1960 GMC 3500, my plan is to do a bit of work to it so I can drive it occasionally. It's great being able to talk with people who won't call me crazy for wanting this truck. 1960 GMC 3500 photo image_zps9bc6b390.jpg | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 | Neat truck and welcome to the Stovebolt Mike B | | | | Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,946 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Jul 2004 Posts: 2,946 | I don't blame you. Are the wheels 22.5? | | | | Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 6 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 6 | Yes, they are the 22.5 wheels. Are these the original for this year? | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | Neat truck. Why are you calling it a 3500? Too big to be a 3000, or 3500 1 ton. Looks more like 4000, or 4500 1 1/2 ton, or 5500, 6500 2 ton truck. Check out, www.6066gmcguy.com for more info., on this type truck. | | | | Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Mar 2004 Posts: 6,189 | Yes, those 22.5 rims could be factory stock...Chevrolet started using them in 1956, GMC may have as well, maybe Spanky can answer that, I'm not a GMC guy. Spanky, With the 5/10 lug wouldn't that be 1-1/2 ton? I alway thought 2 ton had 6-lug... Mike B | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | Mike, I was thinking the 4000 series GMC's in the 60's were 1 1/2 ton. I may be wrong, trying to go by memory, because I've sold all my 60's Chevy, & GMC literature. | | | | Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 6 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 6 | Thanks. From what I see the truck is labeled as a 3500. The plate on the inside of the door says 3500 and it has 3500 badges on it. Plus it has the 350 in the vin. Its states its rated for 16000lbs. Would it still be considered a 1 1/2 ton? | | | | Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,276 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2006 Posts: 1,276 | That is intersting 3500 would be a 1 ton but 16,000 GVW would be a 1 1/2 ton rating. Spaky is correct 4000 is the designation For 1 1/2 ton. It makes me wonder if the cab has been swapped out and they changed the GVW tag. | | | | Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2003 Posts: 940 | I would have to research it to be sure, but in the early years of the new style '60-'66 Chev/GMC trucks, there were some different labeling going on to what we are used to in the later years. I believe I recall some "2-Ton" looking trucks labeled as a 3500 in the early years. They also made a Chevy C-40 for the first 3 years that looked like a "1-Ton" cab.
I would say that what he has is original and correct, but as mentioned, I would need to verify it to be sure.

I drove a '60 Chevy Viking 60,from 1979-1988,almost daily! at the same time,my "daily driver was a '65 G.M.C. 3/4-ton,with a 305E V-6,and 2-speed auto. Rear end was posi 4:11,so TOP speed was 48,and that was pushin'it.Nice find!! I hope the V-6 is still in good enough shape to save. They're gas hogs, but built very well.My 3/4-ton had a canister filter, but adapters are available. I LOVE the '60-'66 Chevy's,and especially the G.M.C's. I think you're going to enjoy your truck. That '60 Viking sat for almost 10-years,before I got it running, again! It took 2 days,to rebuild the carb, clean the tank, new plugs,points,etc...including fixing the lights/wiring! In 8 years,I replaced the starter, water pump, and switched to an alternator-no brake issues,(including hydrovac).I only used the clutch to start out. Tranny shifted like butter,as well as the 2-speed rear,(LOADED).B.T.W... The '60 Viking,(Chevrolet)I drove, was classified as a 2-ton,and it had the 5-stud,5-hole wheels,(10-lug rears). Also on 22:5 rubber. My best friend,at the time, owned a '60 Apache 30,and it was definitely a 1-ton,(17.5,8-bolt wheels). Same front sheet metal as a 1/2,3/4-ton.

The rims are 22.5 on 5/10 lug rims. All the spare tires have tubes, but I was under the impression that these would be tubeless 22.5? | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 | Hy thehopper, you are correct, 22.5" wheels would be tubeless type. As the others have said you have a nice truck there, thank you for saving it! | | | | Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 6 New Guy | New Guy Joined: Nov 2013 Posts: 6 | Thank you, I'm just ready to get this thing moving! Can these rims accept tubed tires as well? The one blown tire that I took off had a tube? | | | | Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Nov 2005 Posts: 6,061 | Hy thehopper, there are no "tube type" tires that I'm aware of that are the correct size to fit your wheels. It was fairly common to put a tube in a tire which couldn't be repaired properly at the time to hold air as a tubeless tire, hope that helps. | | | | Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 603 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2013 Posts: 603 | When trying to determine the series numbers and the size of the trucks. Remember it is a GMC! Nothing ever makes sense when comparing them to the Chevys of the era. We tend to forget that back in the old days, GMC's were different in many ways. Usually they were considered the no-frills workhorse. Nowadays a Chevy Silverado and a GMC Sierra are practically the same. Great find !! When I was young, I thought those hoods were UGLY! Now they look great! Good luck with her.
