I've been working on my Jeep CJ5 project too long and couldn't stand the neglect of my '59 Apache Project.
So today, I visited my account at Classic Auto Parts and bought a number of things on my "wish list".
This includes new pedals, boots, a shifter knob, floor seals etc... baby stepping still.
Still loving my truck!
Jerry

....got the exhaust put on the 52panel today and had the front end lined up. The fellow said he didn't even have to move the toe-in and the "tracking" was dead on. Did I get lucky? You betcha!!!

....now that its quite my neigbors will speak to me again..... Hmmmm, maybe I need to put a cutout on it just to keep them away? hehee

Got it back from Rich's Performance Mufflers in Wiley Texas today. They had it for 3 weeks to install stainless, ceramic coated X pipes with a stock stainless muffler. I didn't want anything so loud I couldn't hear the radio or carry on a conversation while driving, ergo the stock muffler. I had some reservations that it might be too quiet since my son was lobbying for something with a distinct growl. When I picked it up the tone was subdued but with a deep hum, just right. It all worked out as my son said it sounded just like he wanted. Win,win.
I knew all along that the exhaust installation would be a test for how I had placed stuff on the frame. Several items that need changing: my right side emergency brake cable had to be lowered a bit, my Fram fuel filter will need to be raised a bit, and worst of all my tranny cooler was crushed months ago when we lowered the cab onto the frame. It had a slow drip that I assumed was a loose fitting. My Walker radiator has tranny cooler built in, however I chose to not use it for fear that the added heat would overheat the engine. However the engine has been running pretty cool so I am going to deep-six the remote cooler and run lines to the radiator.
More saga to come.

slipped out to the garage last night about 9 and started working on my custom transmission mount. easier to get things done that late when the wife and the neighbors are asleep. the weather is getting better here so more movement in the neighborhood. so its going to get harder to get things done. will post some pics of the crossmember as i go. i have some pretty good ideas that i hope i can incorporate into it. later MO

Rolled on some Duplicolor Bed Liner and got a chance to take some photos in the sunshine.

The only real reason I did the bedliner was to just get everything one color. Kind of like rolling on pudding.

Redid the timing from the ground up. The dizzy came loose and spun so we had to pull it out completely, reset the oil pump gear, replace the rotor, re-gap the points and plugs then reassemble correctly, time with a light and adjust idle at the carburetor. We dialed everything in 100 times better than it ever has been since I, and I would imagine the previous owner, have owned it.

I finally got round to taking my gas tank to work with a view to steam cleaning it inside and out.
Using a soft rubber mallet,i worked my way around bumping the metal,to loosen up any scale and crud.

Long story short I dropped about 3lbs of cr*p out the filler neck
and that's before I even touched it with the steam cleaner.

I think i'm going to have to err on the safe side and drop some $$$ on a new tank.
I've heard good things about Spectra tanks.
So.....Back to the perennial problem of shipping, import duty and taxes, Oh Joy!

Finished bleeding the brakes, installed the new oil filter lines/hoses and drove her around the block! Speedo and all gages work. Engine is running a little rough. Feels good to get it out on the road after 5 years sitting in my garage.

Thanks for all the assistance and insight I've gotten through this forum so far!

More cleaning on the frame. Almost ready to paint. Going to use Rustoleam primer then satin black paint. Under cab just has some minor surface rust so going to try Rustoleam Rust Restorer.

more cleaning...

This is what is going in it.

Engine

With firewall, inner fenders and frame all satin black, I think the engine will look good. When the truck gets painted, I'll do the firewall the same color.

Received my refurbished fuel gauge today in the mail and got it installed. First time in over 20 years that I have a working gas gauge. Just one of those things that I adjusted to, a note book in the glove box noting milage and odometer when I gased up.

Well Jim, I found a vendor here in good ole Blighty that sells them, the equivalent of $323 at the current exchange rate!!!
Mind you,if I did this as a personal import,it would probably work out similarly.
I did have that cash earmarked for my air suspension control panel and an air tank.
Decisions,decisions......

I took her over to a friend of mine who has a lift. I will be removing and trashing the tranny cooler. Cooler
The reason is that I mounted it too high up on the frame and the cab crushed one end of it and caused it to leak. My Walker radiator has a tranny cooler which I had not wanted to use for fear the engine would run too hot. Now I will hook it up and see what happens.

Today...I removed a half inch bolt. (No biggie you say?). Well, I've been working on that same #@%! sucker for 6 months! One of four that go through the cast iron mounts that hold the bumper brackets, it simply would not yield. No amount of heat, Liquid Wrench, torque ala a two foot extension on a breaker bar or banging with a 3 pound sledge made any difference. Like it was welded in place. Drilling it was a (problem*), but it finally succumbed to a half-inch Milwaukee and four broken drill bits. Hoo-rah! And the medical bills for the day weren't even all that bad. Lesson...nuts & bolts that haven't moved for 65 years WILL test your resolve.

Picked up a 55.1 parts truck in GA. and a 261 in central FL. Got back at 0300 today. Just finished unloading them and returned the trailer. Was really only looking for the 55.1 rear to put under the 54. Not sure how I wound up with a whole truck. Oops. Prob gonna cost me a couple of dinners out with the Mrs ohwell

Dropped my original 18 gallon gas tank and began the process of mounting a 44 gallon aluminum (diesel)tank in its' place. Also welded up a few more unnecessary openings in the floor. In spite of a lot of gas (probably $2.00 a gallon at that)on the concrete, no major conflagration to speak of. And I'm in the process of mounting a black/grey tank at the same time on the other side. Lots of hangers to fab. Doubt there's any fire hazard with that one.

Had a good birthday today. Part of it was getting Rosie in shape for the season. Aired up all 6 tires, topped off the coolant and brake fluid, changed the oil, and even adjusted the valves. Good ride when all was done, lots of smiles and waves. Happy Birthday to Me!

Happy Birthday Mikestem!

I was happy to plug a little on my '59 project this weekend.
Still dismantling the cab, I removed the vent control cables, transmission floor cover and PARTS of the glove box.
I was able to rebuild a working latch for the glovebox lid from the two broken latches I had.
I'm wanting to build a cab dolly to remove it from the frame and do some work in my garage with the glass out of it. I'm looking forward to this!

I was looking over the engine of the newest truck added to the collection. Went to Oklahoma 2 weeks ago to pickup this 1933 1 1/2 ton dually. The oil cap was missing so I removed the valve cover to find a mud dobbers motel. This will be fun to cleanup.
