Found 4 '39 steelies with original '39 hubcaps, trim rings and mounted/balanced Firestone Deluxe Champions (with less than 100 miles) for sale very near my house. Bought 'em and spent about 12 hours cleaning those 'yellow walls' up. Mounted them over the weekend and I'm pretty happy with the look. I'm running the '46 caps.

I can always change back to the original black steelies and black walls should the mood strike. grin

Wide whites

I'm looking in to buying some white wall tires like yours. I want them as wide as yours. Could you tell me how wide are they. 3IN OR 4IN....are they 600-16?

Thank You,

Rey

Ouch, how many hours cleaning whitewalls?????
You haven't heard about Whitley's whitewall cleaner in a spray bottle @ wally world???? Use it for soooo much (even cleans up those white tennis shoes).

Yes, I used Westleys Bleche-White Whitewall cleaner. It wouldn't touch 'em. The tires had been improperly stored whitewall to blackwall and were filthy. Westleys is about the best product out there no doubt, and I use it frequently, but these things were beyond Westleys.

This might give some indication as to how bad they were. I was cleaning all the 'flat surfaces' before working around the lettering which is where most of the time was spent.

Cleaning in process.
