I have the opportunity to receive a 1951 1 ton truck, has engine, four speed, three window cab, good frame, dual rear axle with 2 speed read end. I was hoping someone could say if this is desireable for anyone to have? Value for parts?

First of all Welcome to stovebolt. browse around in the gallery and check out the tons of fun forum. We have a lot of guys who like the big trucks. They are not for everybody but once you are bitten you will always have a spot for them.

2 speed axle indicates 4400 1-1/2 ton or a 6400 2 ton.

Thanks, I beleive the vin tag listed load capacity at 1600 lbs. I will check and get the vin to decode this.
Is the 2 speed rear axle desired?

2 ton if 16,000 lb on the tag.

The 2 speed axle is great for a working truck, but very undesirable if you think you'll be going anywhere near highway speeds.

You said you have the opportunity to "receive" this truck. Does that mean someone is giving it to you? If so, by all means take it! If it's not what you want, I'm sure there is a Big Bolt collector somewhere who would take it off your hands.

I can have it towed to my place for free, just don't really want it taking up the room, if I could get someone who would be interested in this I might get it, I suppose I could part it out and sell on e-bay? Any big truck guys in nw washington?

Even if you're a "small truck guy" and the cab is reasonably rust free you'll do well. Unless you turn into a big truck guy and can't see parting it out, that's a good option too.

I have a 52 2 ton that is in good solid shape, runs good, no bed, needs a couple wheel cylinders. I couldn't get $500 for it. I pulled the 235 out and gave it to a client of mine that needed it for his truck. I really don't know what I'm going to do with it. If I was you I wouldn't mess with it, you'll get stuck with it.

Do you have any pics of it ?
Even if you don't want it, or want to part it out, its always good for yard art, I have a 36 ford two ton off the driveway as part of the landscaping, if its complete it will look good with a thrown on paint job !
I would take it if I were you, freebie is freebie!
Where are you ?

I'm all for free trucks..
But a "freebie" is rarely ever free. I've hauled my share of free stuff home only to later try to get rid of it myself and lose money on the whole deal.

It all depends on where it is and what you have available to bring it home, or what it cost you to get it hauled home. Then too consider is it any value to you.

Me personally, I'd drive a good distance for a "free" big bolt with great sheetmetal, but probably not Washington State unless I had something else lined up too.
On the other hand I wouldn't even drive across the county to drag home a pile of rust.

He already stated that it will be towed to his place for free, even if he tows it straight to the scrap yard he'll get steel scrap price for it, and make money,so how do you lose on that?
Free towing, free truck ?
What would he lose ?

Have we seen a picture of it, or do we know the condition yet?

Without knowing condition even a free truck with free delivery, and no use or desire for it could be a bad deal.

Sounds like it could be worth the effort though.

yeah, it is in Concrete. I think I'm going to get it towed over to my place, strip anything I think is worth saving, or what you guys tell me you need, then have it towed to the scrap pile. I just hate to see something usable turned to scrap.

I'm a n00b to these big trucks, and have a '70 C50 that I was planning on using as my new tow rig. Why is the 2-speed rear not desirable for highway speeds?

Different truck and 20 years newer.... same may or may not apply.

The 2 speed Chevy axles up to 53 (that I know of) are all geared really slow, and limit top speed, but do allow you to (slowly) haul a lot of weight.

If a 2 speed is desirable or not all depends on your use and expatiations for the truck, and what exactly is the gear ratio in high?
It's a sure thing that the 2 speed from a 51 is slow; one in a 70 may or may not be to slow, or even to fast, for your plans.

I drove mine home about 90mi, all highway, and it did OK cruising at 60-65mph. I guess mine may not be geared too low, because it did 65mph at a safe 2800rpm. My plans are to swap in my EFI 496 and a 6-speed Allison, so it should be even more highway-friendly.

My gearing is fine; I thought the issue was with the 2spd being less reliable or something... smile

I will be using this truck to haul my 36ft enclosed racecar trailer, or potentially a 46ft GN racecar trailer. My buddy pulls a 48ft GN flatbed hauler with his F450, and we "car pool" our rock buggies 3x or 4x at a time on it. I suspect I may be volunteered as the rig hauler on the next trip. lol

Hello 59, I would keep the engine, trans, cab, clip, doors etc. These items seem to bring good $$$$'s at swap meets. I sold a 235 eng for 350 bucks.
