smile Can some gaskets be replaced just using a sealant such as permatex rather than a replacement gasket? Gaskets for valve cover, valley cover, or pan gaskets is this reasonable? thanks tom

I use it on the ends of the intake on a V8 but wouldn't consider it on the pan or valve covers.

Not in my shop!
I often use permatex # 2 with a gasket, but nothing replaces a gasket.

Use gaskets where applicable. A sealant will be a very temporary fix if it works.

Yes with the right sealant. http://www.permatex.com/brand_right_stuff.htm

This stuff will hold anything, and you will bend the covers getting them back off if needed, its that strong. It works just as well with gaskets to. Don't get it on you, it takes a while to wear off!

Why would you use an $8 tube of sealer in place of a $2 gasket?

We use RTV. New lubricants and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel penetrate cork gaskets.

Gaskets are cheap and the cleanup from a sealant is a pain. I hate cleanin up some jokers sealant mess. Use the gaskets!

.... I agree with Joe H. guys. Unless your a mechanic you will not likely to ever have to pull a pan, or intake, off in our lifetime if we do the job right and while we age the chance of leaks all over the drive way or in the garage are lessened.
We've used it on racing engines and once the pan is in place you get pretty good after a while wiping the edge of the pan to leave a pretty and smooth seal that will withstand a lot!!

I DO use gaskets and I usually make individual choices on different jobs.....

Pans and covers that require a liquid sealant are designed differently than gasketed surfaces. A liquid joint needs a groove in it to act as a bead lock to keep the sealant in place after its cured. Flat, smooth sufaces require a gasket. Also, some gaskets are a factor in clearances between the two parts. My 2 cents, use a gasket when a gasket is called for,
Scott

gaskets serve a prupose. if they were not a necessity. then throw it together, and see how far you get. The sealants complement, not replace.

We use sealants because we know we will see it back if it fails. We only work on our own fleet.
