Best was in the port of St. Croix, rum factory was just up the hill from our pier. The local stuff was just about .85 cents a bottle or by the glass rum punch was only 5 cents. The balance of my enlistment was totally wasted prowling waters North of the Arctic Circle. Only drink to be found was torpedo alcohol, courtesy of the USN.

USS Sylvania AFS 2 for 2 1/2 years of which the first 1 1/2 was homeported out of Naples Italy. What an experience for a youngster having never been away from home. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
The last year was at the Navy Reciever Facility in Northwest Va.
Would I do it again. You betchya.

Have you been to the Ajax website? If you're interested, there's a list of former crew members and comments about their cruises etc. I guess she was scrapped in the 80s. I rode out a typhoon in her in 1970 or 71. It was a "puckery" experience. We also lost a chunk out of one of the screws which they then repaired in Sadebo.
