Went underway 1 time to San Fran. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jan 2000 Posts: 2,074 | Update- Most dangerous patrol we made was actually in the Carribean, where we were forced to taste all the local rum in those waters. Best was in the port of St. Croix, rum factory was just up the hill from our pier. The local stuff was just about .85 cents a bottle or by the glass rum punch was only 5 cents. The balance of my enlistment was totally wasted prowling waters North of the Arctic Circle. Only drink to be found was torpedo alcohol, courtesy of the USN.

USS Sylvania AFS 2 for 2 1/2 years of which the first 1 1/2 was homeported out of Naples Italy. What an experience for a youngster having never been away from home. I wouldn't trade the experience for anything.
The last year was at the Navy Reciever Facility in Northwest Va.
Would I do it again. You betchya.

Have you been to the Ajax website? If you're interested, there's a list of former crew members and comments about their cruises etc. I guess she was scrapped in the 80s. I rode out a typhoon in her in 1970 or 71. It was a "puckery" experience. We also lost a chunk out of one of the screws which they then repaired in Sadebo.
