On my 62 c-30, the old speedometer had the needle broken off and the speedometer made so much noise I finally just pulled the cable out of it. I have since aquired a cluster out of a 62 2-ton and put the speedometer from it into my c-30. I figured the speed would be 10 or so mph off, which it was, but after driving a few miles it started making the same loud noises (sorta like an air body saw makes) and the speed jumped from 35 up to a range of 50 to 70 mph. I was probably doing about 40ish. Also, when I slow down, the noise stops and the needle starts acting normal again. Any ideas?

Put some grease on the piece that fits into the back of the speedo--

The end that goes into the speedometer. The end "somehow" got worn down and depending on the speed it acted different and the needle bounced. I put in a NEW cable and had the same problem. Then I thought the speedo head was worn.....wrong. I took it over to my "guage pal" and when we checked it with a set of dial indicators found that even the new cable end was smaller than the stock which he carried. I had him cut me a new one that is the right size on the end and now the speedo works very nice.

A lot of the bigger trucks had a little adapter on the outlet of the trans. to calibrate the speedo. Sometimes you have to take it apart & grease it inside. If the speedo was right before it should be right with the other head. All speedo,s were set for 1000 rev,s per mile.
