Phillip removed my bezel and guage unit (59 triangle) greatly appreciated. So last night ok lets see if the speedometer works. Hooked up a drill to opposite end watched no needle movement. Hum tear guage apart needle gone, vanished ect. So i try to see if the pin that the needle sits on is moving. Can not see it, so I go get little grasshopper and she says well I think so pops but maybe not. OK, we both are blind!! So I trear it apart a little more, well now I know how everything is suppose to work. Pretty cool really!! My question is can a person just buy the little gearbox that runs that operation or do I say the heck with it and just buy the whole blankety blank thing for 59 guages and all! popcorn The Truth is Out There (ok, ok, so I am getting to be a tight wad) Pops | | | | | Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Feb 2002 Posts: 12,029 | just get what ya need Ben, the speedo head can be replaced if it doesn't work, the needle is available, and each of the gauges can be individually replaced - if the chrome bezel is pretty ugly, that can be bought alone and not too spendy - make sure the drill is actually driving the unit, need to get into the hole to engage the right thing [I use an end cut off an old cable], and try the drill both directions, I'm thinking it takes the drill in reverse I could prolly come up w/ a functioning speedo head out of the dozen gauge sets on hand in a pinch Bill | | | | | Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 Bolter | | Bolter Joined: Oct 2002 Posts: 4,066 | Gee........will you ever get that project on the road......... help is on the way Redryder pixMy HotrodA veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard, or reserve - is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to The 'United States of America', for an amount of "up to and including my life."I am fighting cancer and I am winning the fight | Pain is part of life; misery is an option. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 | Joker your too funny buddy!! Hey did get some work done this weekend. Thanks to Jay and Phil!!
Ok Red: The drill actually did work in forward because the mileage barrel would move forward w/clockwise rotation of drill and mileage would backup with counter clockwise drill rotation. Heck I thought about using an electric drill to unwind it back to 000000.0. Right now mileage is at 120 plus thousand.
Let me check things out a little closer and we will get together on what I need. Very fortunate the V bezel will clean up real nice. Have buffing tools here at work and a paste that is cleaning up the better chrome real well.

Just don't turn it part way back. When I was a kid, I remember my Dad looking at used cars that had been reset to zero. Is that still true? | | | | | Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jul 2005 Posts: 1,158 | You're NOT supposed to do it.
Different states have different laws. Michigan doesn't care what the mileage is if the vehicle is 10 years or older.
As Fred said, Texas will have you shot at dawn if they catch you.
Check with the DMV in your state and see what is applicable to YOU. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 1,971 | South Dakota doesn't care if it is over 10 years old either. If I have an original mileage car, they won't put the mileage on the title unless I make a specific request to state the mileage and have a statement from the previous owner about the mileage being original. You gotta be careful if original miles is important to the vehicle history. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 | Ok guys all good points and yes it is against the law in Indiana if I remember right. But!! What would be the difference if you put a new one in? popcorn The Truth is Out There (Oh here we just show proof the speedometer has been tampered with and its filed on the title) Pops | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 141 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 141 | Hey, Popcorn, I went through the exact same problem with my '59 Apache. One thing I learned is that later model speedo gearboxes are very, very similar. The only real difference is that in some of the later speedos the drive cable doesn't screw on, it snaps on with a retainer on the gearbox. They still work. I got several from e-bay just in case - they're cheap. My odometer tumblers are from a '79 Corvette - works fine. | | | | | Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2003 Posts: 687 | Thanks Apache Kid: I'll put that im my memory bank!
