what does it cost to register a 63 Chevy 2 Ton COE i don't really want to pay for comercial plates cause i hear thats real expensive but i'm thinking about Farm Plates but then what do i do if i want to go out of state? so i really don't know what i'll end up doing but i'm still contemplateing if i'm going to buy the truck or not

Check with MN-DOT or wherever you purchase the plates. Many states only require you to declare a GVW and will sell a plate accrdingly. If you never haul anything then it shouldn't be more than a pickup or so but the county or State can give you the correct answer.

If you register it as a collector vehicle, you'll have some limitations, but it sure beats paying gross tonnage!
Collectors insurance is also alot cheaper

In Iowa, you pay by the ton. I licensed mine for 6 ton for about $125.00 a year. I figure that's cheap compared to the fines if you don't have the tags,

I believe for farm use, it goes by gross weight; and if I'm not mistaken, I think you can also buy just part of the year, since farming is seasonal. I don't recall all of the details. Since mine are just big boy's toys, I put collector plates on them. $25.00, and you only have to do it once!!

In Maine you can register anything as an "antique" if it's over a certain (25?) number of years old. Supposedly just for parades, but if it's in decent shape the only reason the police stop you is to look at your rig.

you could also register it as an RV. and as farming, you can designate to use it only a certain amount out of the year

i'm gona be making the truck into a flatbed bout 24 foot long so its gona be hauling stuff mainly just cars/trucks those are the plans i have so i don't know how some of them ideas will work if i'm going to be hauling

Here in WA. tags and tonnage are separate. On the dump I buy tonnage monthly. If you plan on using it for business talk to some local businesses doing the same thing.

Nate, are you hauling commercially, or just to parades and shows and such? If the latter, you could probably get by with collector plates.
I even hauled a load of crushed rock with mine, and nobody bothered it.

My suggestion to you is to find a "year of manufacture" plate. It's actually registered as a collector, but it's not so conspicuous. My '48 2ton has 1948 Minn. plates on it.

It is realy hard to say. Things are so differant from state to state.

i do plan on hauling with the truck mainly just for my own use won't be used for a business or anything like that but mainly just hauling cars or the occasionaly load of scrap iron farm plates would work but i would like to be able to drive the truck out of the state

i could get ahold of plates for '63 year but i need ones for a 2 ton truck i don't think i could take 63 plates off a 63 1/2 ton and slap them on a 63 2 ton but then again i'm not really sure how that works

Best thing you can do is look up the laws concerning the use & restrictions for collector vehicles in your state & then call the DMV & ask a few pointed questions. In WA if you register as a collector vehicle, the only thing you can haul is butt, I wanna use it to haul my hot rod & the occasional odd things, hence why I registered mine regularly. However I had to get a commercial registration due to the gross tonnage and that kinda hurt. Better yet was the insurance, most copmpanies I talked to wouldn't insure something like my beast & I eneded up getting business insurance through Farmers. It's not bad, but could be better. Good thing is I can haul whatever I want, for myself or for profit, and my truck AND the load are covered.
Been a real headache, but once it's done & overwith, not such an issue.

As for the plates, truck plates are truck plates in most states. Another question for the DMV.

With my 38 I registered it historic no wieght on it. With the 48 I registered it farm use no wieght limit but was restricted to roads adjacent to farm. Nobody ever bothered me I ran about 25 mile radius. DOT has gotten more pig headed now though always out trying to raise more revenue. There was a insurance co advertising in Wheels of Time said you could haul your own vehicles and be covered it did not clarify how to tag them.

Hey Nate, my '48 is a 2 ton and I have no idea what the '48 plates are originally from, I bought them an an antique store in Alexandria. I resistered my truck as a collector, didn't tell them the GVW, I just told them make and model, 1948 Chevrolet Loadmaster. The best advice when dealing w/DMV is if they don't ask, you don't tell.

By the way, I had my radiator re-cored at that radiator shop over in Arlington. Pretty spendy but he did a beautiful job.

I know exactly where you're at. I get through there once or twice a year. We'll have to try and hook up sometime. I'm just East of Mankato.

Any one out there from massachusetts? How did you register yours? I thought about antique plates but there are alot of restrictions.Don't know how well they are inforced. commercial plates will cost a fortune here with insurance. I don't know if I have to go with commercial plates due to weight the tag says 20,000 lbs.I am only using it for personal use. Most people around here don't even know what a C50 is. I haven't talked to my insurance agent yet but I have 4 cars with him now so he will have to get inventive or I'll be shopping for new insurance for all of them.

O.K. Nate, I lied. :rolleyes: You got me curious as to just how I registered my truck. I just found my registration form and this is how I registered, along with the fees I was charged.

I was lucky on the sales tax part, because my truck was owned by a previous family member, therefore considered a "gift", because no money exchanged hands. It's registered as 1948 Chev. 2-ton truck. (I can't believe I told them 2-ton, I don't remember that.) It has "YOM" (year of manufacture) plates, and because of the year falls into the catagory of "classic". The fees are as follows:
-plate reg. fee $25.00
-s.p.v. fee $ 3.50
-transfer fee $ 5.50
-m.v.transfer fee $10.00
-county fee $ 8.50

The collector/classic/pioneer class of vehicles are to be operated solely as collector items, and not used for general trasportation. That is taken right from the MN-DMV website. The only problem I see is that you want to be able to operate out of state. I have a '67 1/2 ton w/collector plates, I've pulled a trailer full of scrap to Mankato with it, and hauled materials from Menards, and used it as a daily driver for about a year, and was never qustioned about it once. But, I've never hauled anything out of state with it. I guess I've never heard of anyone being hassled about over using a collector vehicle. I don't think this is one of the laws that is strictly enforced here in our land of 10,000 lakes. But you might get questioned out of state.
What I would do is call a liscense office, other than the one you plan on doing your registration at, and ask them what is best. Keep in mind that farm plates can be paid for quarterly if that better suits your needs. That's just my thoughts.

Pakrat48 i took a radiator to that shop in arlington also but the said it has holes all over and needs to be recored witch was like 250 so i had to pass but the owner seems like a real nice guy, he tried to see if he could piece one together to keep the cost down he understood my money situation so i'll definately take my work there i'll definatly have to look into that year of manufacture thing i don't really need it to operate out of state but i would prefer it to be able to drive out of state
