I am getting ready to get my title on my '50 Suburban. My question is how to register it? Historic vehicle or regular title? It has no seat belts or other inspection passing features so I really don't know which roust to go.

The rules and requirements and options differ by state. They are probably posted on-line.

Find out what the options/rules are in MO.

Also, if you get antique vehicle insurance, it sometimes has rules regarding storage, and type of driving allowed.

.....are you just getting "title only" at this time. If so, don't worry about the other stuff. This is a general rule of thumb for those who want to make sure the vehicle is in their name before spending hundreds of dollars on something they do not have title to.

Does Mo. have a mandatory yearly vehicle inspection?

Does Mo. grandfather your vehicle in because it did not come factory with belts?

State by state, as Tim mentioned, are different but I've never heard of any of those laws applying to get title of ownership....but I could be wrong?

Welp..... my burb has no title since i pulled it out the field its been rotting away in for 40 plus years and I'm stuck having to hire a lawyer to get a title. Trust me.....salvage title is a no....... lost title is a no.....

The only other option is a bonded title and that requires a whole bunch of "iffs" in dealing with a bunch of people in Jeff City who may or may not know that the process even exists.

My main reason for the original post is to learn all I can before I sit down with the lawyer.

I think you're confusing "titling" and "tagging". A title says what it is and that it's yours. It's when you register it for a tag that you'll need to decide on an antique or regular tag. If you're currently looking to get a title, how old it is should have no bearing unless you're in a state that doesn't require a title for certain age vehicles. I have an 80 year old car and the title is identical in appearance and content (other than brand name and numbers) to the title for my 4 year old car.

Yes Tiny…… I am very interested in knowing which direction I should move once I acquire a title… Antique or Regular. 25 years and older qualifies for the antique tag if I choose to do so.

Can't speak for Missouri but in Kansas it's much cheaper to get an antique plate.

Oklahoma restricts where/how you drive if you have an antique tag. All my oldies have regular tags and regular insurance. Drive all I want and anywhere I want.🛠

I live in Kansas City and had to deal with the folks at the DVM with my title issues. I had a title with dead owners name that never signed it over to my brother in-law who owned the truck since 1969. I went round and round with the local DMV over paper work and what not and never could get straight answers. I loaded up all the paper work and went to Jeff City. I was in and out in 20 minutes with all I needed to title the truck in my name. I had to purchase a bonded title just so no one could come along and claim the truck, it was $300 for five years, or something along those lines. It was no big deal, my home owners insurance company issued it. I then had to take the truck to the Highway Patrol for VIN verification, which was nothing since the truck had no VIN to start with. All they did was look at the engine serial number ( 1970 250 Chevrolet ), transmission serial number ( 197? turbo 350 ) and ask about some of the other parts installed. This took all of 15 minutes or so to get done. They then issued an MO VIN similar to trailers and home built kit cars. Once they were done, I sent the papers back to Jeff City and my title came VIA mail in a week or two. Jeff City was very helpful.

I tagged my truck as an antique through Grundy Worldwide Insurance. There are some restrictions, but nothing that changes the way I can use my truck. Price is so much per $1000, so you can set your own value, provided the photos can back up the price estimate. I pay $230 per year for $36K value, full coverage. My normal car insurance company was going to charge 4 times that per year. You should contact your agent to see what they recommend. For just a few extra dollars extra, I have Year Of Manufacture tags, 1937 Missouri tags, permanently mine with no yearly inspection. Everyday tags will require inspections.

In S.C. we buy an antique tag and it is permanent. We also don't pay county taxes which are only about 10 bucks if I did.....but I also do not have to pay the 25 dollar road use fee each year. I used my State Farm for several years till they got to high. Now, I'm with grundy and never looked back. I can drive my truck anytime as long as it is not my daily driver...as in to work and back ect. Never no problems and on two vehicles I saved quite a few $$$. Somewhere around 4 hundred dollars......both insured for 25k.

I have several vehicles with historic plates.
No inspections at all, you just need an in state title that is signed and dated.

Tags are good forever with no annual renewal, unless you get vanity plates, then is just to pay for the special tags each year.
You are allowed 1000 miles a year for personal use.
Unlimited miles to and from, shows, parades or repair.
So, if you want to take a road trip to Maine, just tell them about a event or parade you are going to.
You are also required to keep a log book of the miles and the reason.
I have been pulled over a few times for other reasons, but have never been asked to show the logbook. (no, not for speeding either)

The 54 Plymouth I bought in 1975 and still have, has never been inspected.
All I have to do is call the insurance company, put liability insurance on it and its legal to drive on public roads, brakes or not.

As for insurance, I did not give much for any of them, so if I want to drive one, I just put liability on them.
It usually runs about 80 bucks a year.

I'll PM you my cell phone number.
Give me a call if you want to hear the rest of the story, or get together and swap lies.

Don

It's not MO but here in FL - I bought my 1950 3100 back in the 90's. The PO had the truck titled and I just had to have a police officer come out and verify the identification number on the title (stamped engine #) matched the title. He signed off on it and I took the signed transfer title into the DMV. They immediately issued a new title in my name.

Another funny thing about titles in Mo.
The 67 GMC ladder truck I bought from a volunteer FD, said pickup on the title.
I did not notice, it when I bought the truck.
Went to the main DMV office, at the state capital, to get a title in my name and historic tags for it.
Told the person behind the counter that it is a firetruck, she said, it doesn't matter.
She issued the tags and a title came in the mail about two weeks later.
New title also said pickup.
This truck weighs just under 26,000 pounds without water in the tank.
How could that be a pickup?

Don

Come on Martin!
You have met my wife.
Remember the good looking hot redhead, Vicki.

But you are right.
It amazed me on how many good looking mothers would stop and ask if their preteen could stand next to it and get a picture.
Of course I would say, give me your camera and climb in and I'll get the picture.
The smiles on the kid's faces and the Mom's is priceless.

They are that, Windyville. The titling/tagging question comes up a lot and usually generates a lot of discussion (making your user name quite appropriate ... wink ) At anyrate, as tagging/titling differs by state, the only information actually useful for you is that from your own state. The rest of it, while interesting (possibly wink ) is irrelevant.

Bottom line: the ONLY way to figure this out is to email, call or visit your local DMV, explain your situation and have *them* tell you what to do. Document what they tell you (get names/phone numbers).

Good luck.

For the rest of you (um, Don & Martin...), what do you think Cletis would be telling *you* right about now? nono

John, you forgot one thing. All DMV's are not equal. Even in your fair state. I have driven several times from one to another and got difference results.
However, you advice to deal with a DMV from his own state is spot on.

....yeah, I know what Cletis would do.....move this to the spoon smile RIP Charlie.

I know that a lot of problems can be caused by which DMV office you pick to use. Ours in Rolla has to be one of the worst. I had an issue with a formerly abandoned '53 Chevy 150 business coupe I tried to buy years ago. The seller had been to the DMV in Houston and was told what paperwork was required, which he passed to me when he sold it. I took said paperwork to the Rolla DMV and was told that they couldn't do that, that I didn't have the right information. I straight up asked them what they needed from me to make it work. The only response I received was that they can't do that and I don't have the right paperwork.

Yep..... zero help ANYWHERE. It just seems like the ladies working at the DMV have a bone to pick with the world. Very bitter and cold......can't imagine working at one of those places. So negative.
