Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | I used stake pockets off of my parts trucks to make them. Then used 16 gauge 1-3/4" tubing to do the top. I plugged the ends with frost plugs 1-5/8".
My end plan is to fabricate some "fender extensions" and bolt the stock fenders to them. A custom dually fender that can be returned to a single rear wheel if wanted. I think that will turn some heads!

I am rebuilding (from scratch) a 9 foot box for my "Howard Knapp" 1 ton turned into a 1/2 / 3/4 ton truck...I gotta a couple of questions...on the side panels you have a something that sticks out near where the rear fender mounts...one under the fender and one under the top rail...what are those things for?
How big of a "kick" did you use on the bottom of the side panels? I have figured out the side panel is supposed to be 19" tall and the what is left over I be bending and will be using the to cover the stake pockets tops and mount the top rail to it also...
Hope mine comes out half as good as yours...
Also are you using wood for the bottom of the box floor?

Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | Mike, Those little stick outs are little stake pockets. The top one originally had a hole on the bent,angled top side for a hole but now it's closed on mine. The one underneath the rear fender is only a side panel stiffener. It's a stake pocket that I cut on angle to reproduce the original one. The bottoms lip kick out on my panels are 3/4", but there's room for up to 1". My panel sides, I tried to cut to 18 3/4" and it came out at 18 7/8" which seems perfect. I'm not sure how these pictures turned out but here is the diagram I drew before I got it bent. The top side (the bent part) I cut at 4 3/"4 but I ended up trimming off 11/16" in order to have a nice gap to weld on. http://s1372.photobucket.com/user/foxj12/library/?view=recent&page=1

But I have cut out the templates and have trimmed the sheet metal to the width I need. I'm not sure if the extra little stake "stiffener" that resides under the 1 ton rear fender is present on a 3/4 ton. I believe this is a 1 ton only thing. The 1/2ton trucks did not have that extra or the little tiny one tucked under the top tubing rail. They (1/2's) only had the front and rear stake pockets.
1tons had "5"- (4 actual holes in top bent angle of bed side)- the front stake, 2nd front, little one under tube rail, medium one under fender that only served as a stiffener and the rear stake.
If anybody knows more about 3/4s, I’d like to know, too.

The rear flows better as it does not dip down as it meets the bed side. I was expecting this but it does not really concern me. I still have to fine tune a lot of stuff. Mold metal towards front and rear bottoms of fender to fill the gaps, adjust some of the tacks straighter. I had to pie cut it in numerous places to get it back straight and unfortunately now it isn't as perfect as it was. I must exercise more patience on the other side and use a couple of tricks I've thought of to counteract the bowing of the fender extension. I am however extremely pleased with how the running board is starting to look. I had to do a little trimming to get it fit perfectly as per the instructions from MAR-K. After all my careful measurements too! I have always felt that it is a shame that someone can't manufacture a fender extension like that and sell the complete 9' bed package. I have a question for you on how you mounted or fabricated your fender extensions. Are they c-shaped in cross section so you can bolt to box and to the original fenders? and do they have cross supports?
What I am doing is mounting 1ton fenders or panel fenders to my box since i have them. They are much narrower than normal fenders and need extensions/spacers. If you have any pictures from underneath how you mounted them that would be helpful to me.

Yes, the end plan was to enable me to convert the box from dually to single by simply removing the extension and changing running boards. Hopefully the change would take an hour or so. I'd like to show the idea at the summer show&shines by having one side a dually and the other side single.
I will grab some photos and share with you later tonight or tomorrow. They are C- shaped like you describe. I used the fenders to outline the mounting surfaces on a plate sheet. I traced it out, then cut out the two thin LARGE C-shaped mounting surfaces. Then I drilled the holes in the C's that would line up with the fenders/bed side. I used threaded rod and nuts to space out the two mounting surfaces. This allows you to set the gap nicely and helps square up the holes before you weld them. Set your gap, cut your sheet to cover the two mounting surfaces and slowly tack weld it all together. I also thought about cross bracing but was surprised at how stiff the extension was when I was done. For now I may just add a steel rod brace from the back of the extender to the box side like the original fender had.
I'm sure this is hard to follow. The pictures will make a world of sense I hope.

You can see on the one photo the threaded rod. I put these through each hole to square up t he fender. Worked well. As you weld it up, go slowly, the first one "sprung " on me and was a bear to get back to where it was. Hopefully these help. One of the hardest parts to get just right is the front "beltline" near the bottom of the fender's front. Especially if you don't have the proper tools. I used pieces of angle iron in my big vice to "coax" this beltline and had to do a lot of fine tuning with hammer and dolly to get it right. Good luck!

The threaded spreader rods were only there to hold it square while welding. Once you're done welding, take them out. I was surprised at how stiff it was. With the running boards bolted up, and the splash apron it's pretty solid. The back of the stock fender still flops a little and this is where I will have to figure out a brace.
BTW, I used 16 ga sheet for this project.

Running board right side to start and finish, rebuild stock ones too so I have the single wheel option and the 9ft box is DONE. Hopefully by New Year. I do have Xmas holiday break from school so it might be possible! Ahhh, maybe June. : D
It sure is hard to move around my single bay shop with that huge 1 ton in there. Add on the dually extenders and I literally have 10 inches of space between my north and south workbenches! It sure has made building this side a challenge. I did the left in July. Outside. In the sunshine. With no snow. With tons of room. I sure hope this new side is straight because I couldn't get a far away look at it! :O

Would it be kosher to run a 9 foot bed without splash aprons on it?....I have my 9 foot bed done and then I cobbed up some super long running boards but never got around to cobbing up splash aprons....they look really complex with all the funky bends and radius's too...can you run them with out them on the truck???

In addition it would also help stop rocks from coming up near the cab or hitting corner windows. My 2 cents, put something in there. AS I was welding on my running boards the other day, I wondered how a set of splash aprons might look if they were simply square? It would be a whole lot easier to build and may not look half bad. Or how about this? I have cut a 48" long piece of 10' exhaust tubing into 1/4's. This pipe has the same radius (+/- 1/16") so I will use this to build my own splash apron. It will be much heavier and may require extra bracing, but it sure beats trying to fix the bent, old, rusty ones I have. I am still waiting on getting my new boards cut and bent. The single and dually boards swap out quite nicely. The new splash aprons are solid. My wife and I went for a drive to celebrate and met a new neighbor as he came over after I pulled into the driveway. He was happy to see that I "got her going." Because I built my own rear bumper bracket, which in turn moved the bumper up and in towards the bed, the bumper sits higher than stock which interferes with the stock license mount. I will create a drop bracket that will mount the plate below the bumper. I don't like how the stock bumper sits low and you can see the frame and "underparts." This drop bracket will utilize the light for the plate so it will still be legal. I considered mounting the plate under the gate in the middle of the cross sill, but somehow it seems to "clutter" the clean look. mismatched bolts (find some stovebolts) to the tailgate.
Or just hang the plate with some bailing wire.

I have built the bracket for the license plate and have used some JIC bulkhead hydraulic fittings and 1/2" stainless steel tubing to encase my light wires. It will look pretty clean when done I hope.

I have discovered that the "mill scale" on the new steel is difficult to get off with the blaster. However, the surface rust stuff comes off like dust. So, I have put out those new pieces I have built overnight, wet them down and will blast them when they get a nice flash rust on them. It really is easier to blast off. I think the semi gloss black on a big old one ton will look nice especially with the dual tires. But man am I beginning to hate block sanding. It was fun at first but not now. I have the time to do it and it is very satisfying knowing that I've done everything on the truck so far. It's easy to see how vehicles on tv can quickly become 6 figures. Labour isn't cheap and oh boy do I have a ton of labour into this ole girl...

I blasted and primed the apron and began to prep/body work the box and fenders. Sand, sand, sand, sand, ugh. My wife came in and saw my work and pointed out a few spots that weren't smooth. However, I do want my home built box to have a little character; so I've left the spot welds visible on the pockets, slight ridges where the pocket holes would be and ripples on the front panel. This isn't going to be a show truck so I'm happy with the result so far. As for building character, perhaps when I'm done I should just haul stuff in it and bang it up some! I do have a couple slight imperfections to tackle so I sprayed down another build of primer. Looks pretty good. They have set their reading and exercise goals and I decided to set a goal of truck painting. My goal was to have the 1 ton painted and body assembled by end of June. I really am feeling the pinch here! Don't know if I'll make it and my grade 2's sure are eager to call me out if I didn't work on the truck the evening before. The rear fenders are done (FINALLY!) but still need to body work the fronts, hood and extensions and doors. And then paint. I need at least a SOLID week (or more) to do all this (12hr days).

Plus NHL playoffs have really been cutting into my truck time!
and the 1/2 ton has been getting a little attention too 😎

Well, I think this weekend has finally seen the end of the box body work. It's pretty darn straight (not concourse style) but I'm happy with it. I shot another coat of primer on Saturday but will double check with guide coat and will then probably give it one more before top coat. Looking pretty good, now onto the front end.
I also tore into my parts truck today to get the wheel cylinder adjusters as I had a couple broken teeth on the star adjusters of the one ton. The drum came off very nicely considering the old girl had been sitting in the trees for 30 years. I also finished removing the clips from the old rims. I have 17 clips in a ziplock bag ready to go. I don't know about you guys but I always seem to need a spare when working with old truck stuff...

I lost a little bit of tire height by going with the 215/85/16 size but it still looks pretty good.
The left door is completely body worked and ready for final prime coat and paint.
Right door needs a little more but should be done in a few hours.
Hood remains to be started.
Front fenders and splash aprons to complete.

A one-part polyurethane might not have cyanoacrylates in it.
Have you checked the MSDS for the product? What is brand and name of paint?

We used it on our rigs and it holds up very well. It will last a long time on this old GMC. I also pulled the tranny while cab is off. The cheap plastic clutch alignment tool was the problem. I thought my pilot bushing was egged, turned out the disc wasn't centered hence the output turning slightly when engine running. Another check off the list. I will widen my battery tray for a 12 volt also in the next couple days.

Here's the jinx Martin! I shouldn't have said anything, but at least it's not the box...
Sanded down the cab this afternoon in prep for top coat and discovered a couple tiny flaws on the roof that I want to skim before paint. No one will ever see it but it will bug me if I don't! So, cab paint is delayed a tiny bit more.
I installed the core support and rubber tonight. I used a rubber gasket material with adhesive backing along the top frame rail to prevent inner fender squeaks. Hopefully it works well. It sure is nice installing pieces that aren't rusted, fit beautifully and look nice to boot!

I Think it turned out pretty nice. I killed the lights and did a few double and triple checks with an LED light to find the "thin" spots. I think I got them all.

Today's highlights:
1. Coat 3 on the bed wood. 2 to go.
2. Sanded down right rear fender and hood and repainted as I had 1 run on the fender and a "heavy" spot on the hood's nose that didn't look right.
3. Cleaned up booth.
4. Installed more sound deadening material in the cab. It really makes a huge difference.
5. Created a gasket for the tranny cover and secured it in place.
6. Installed my rebuilt vacuum wiper motor and linkages.
WHAT A PAIN!! I have no gauges, heat ducting, seats, steering column or radio installed and it was a chore. I also consider myself quite flexible for a fella. I can't imagine doing that with everything installed. Good grief. Oh well, I'd better wait as it is important to him. I can't wait! I built my exhaust this afternoon as I had to take a couple hour break and watch the solar eclipse with my wife, relatives and neighbors who were stopping in to see the truck and visit. I ordered a bunch of parts from LMC and CP. $1000!
I took my old glass in to have new pieces recut. I thought it was quite reasonable but still it was a touch on the wallet. $440 for all 7 pieces.
Got insulation for the cab. $140 (that includes a bunch of other stuff from Home Depot that doesn't count towards the truck).
Got groceries. Was pretty low on milk! And then I think I broke my pinky toe but smashing it on a cart wheel with only flip flops on! I had to wrap a napkin around it as I was bleeding all over the place. Limp, limp, limp. Boy, was I mad!
Tonight's progress:
Bed wood install started. Just the outer boards and bolts. Those bolts that go down on top of the spring hangar were a bear to get the nut on! I stopped for Papa's sake; he's home Saturday.
Picked up and install the rear right fender after its 3rd time in the paint booth! Yeesh. Looks good now.
Installed welting.
Installed more sound deadener with my cat watching!
It was a fun day.

Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | Today I went to the school and started getting the classroom ready. Worked at that for a few hours and then wrenched on the truck in the late afternoon. Today I finished installing the sound deadener in the cab and then the insides of the doors. I then installed the door seal that runs along the outer door lip. I didn't enjoy working with that weatherstripping glue let me tell you. Sticky, bloody mess even when trying my darnedest to be clean and tidy. After the seal set up for a little while I decided to mount the doors and set the gap. I put on the strikers and loosely adjusted and got the doors closer and closer. I reinstalled the old inside door handles so I could open and close the doors. I set the doors where I was happy and then closed them up to help compress the seal a bit. It was very satisfying to hear the door solidly shut with no clangingI The rebuilt latches, strikers, seals and sound deadening matting have done wonders! I was a bit nervous about hanging the doors by myself but it went very smoothly. There are no windows installed so they are "light". I opened the hinges right up, got bolts and hardware ready, picked up door on the inside and then sat on the running board with the door on my knees and slid the door onto the hinge. No problems at all. It went very well today. She was due yesterday with our first child (a boy) and I'm looking forward to getting my first "apprentice/wrench fetcher!" It's fun teaching my nieces and nephews about things; I imagine it will be even more rewarding when it's our own and not the "rentals 😉" from my siblings!

It's going to be exciting and terrifying at the same time. Parenting, work, hobbies; I have been hitting the truck hard lately and it will slow considerably soon. Today my nieces were over. One is 2 years old and the other is 2 months. While the elder one played in the backyard, I had the baby in her little seat in the back of the truck while I cut insulation. It was neat having them there.
I began to install the insulation in the cab over top of the sound deadener this morning. Looks and sounds good so far. I scraped off some of the excess glue that squeezed out on the door seal.
Last night I went out to the farm and picked up the floor pan for the 70 C10 cab that will be undergoing extensive surgery this winter.

Mom is doing well and we are adjusting and settling into family life quite smoothly. Back to school has started and it's busy. I have 31 rascals this year in grade 4! Last year my grade 2 class pushed me hard to get the truck painted. We set goals together and unfortunately I was unable to complete the paint by the end of June. Despite being 2 months late I created a link and sent it to their new grade 3 teacher and asked her to share it with them. It was nice to have them come and visit with me about it! "You did it Mr. J!" "I like the black paint!" "Will you bring it to school?" -This year's goal: drive it to school before the end of the year. Well it's been super busy, but I still managed to find some time to do some wrenching...but I had some help 😉. Floor mats are complete. I made them in 3 pieces and have them overlapping. They just need a wash and a final clip down. I am very happy with how they turned out. I can easily get access to the battery, master cylinder and transmission if need be. I also installed a few more pieces on the clip. Inner braces, light terminals, front pan supports. Installed the hood latch piece into the hood. I installed the pedals, throttle and stomp starter. I used flat fender washers over top of the old "mat stumps" and then put c clips under the washer to hold the mat down. It works really well despite being very hard to do by myself. I pulled the generator and got the alternator in. Now to get a different pulley and the new harness. My little wrencher was asleep in his little swing so I quietly took apart my speedo and odometer for a clean and rebuild. Took me a lot longer than anticipated because of the tumblers. I got them "refigured" out and new numbers and MPH put on. My wife doesn't say much about the truck but the other night she made my day. She came home and entered via the garage. "Hi love" small talk ensued and then as she left the room she said, "That old truck looks really good. It's crazy where it started and where it is now. I can't wait for a drive." 😃 Today I installed the rubber inside the door that "sweeps" the glass as it moves up and down. What a tricky buggar. I used a water based lube to aid sliding it in. Trimmed off the excess and viola! I began to lay out the vent windows and associated parts and doodads. But I forgot to buy glass setting tape! So the vent windows and door windows are momentarily on hold. I also need to get some string for the back and front windows. So instead of glass, I installed the duals, glovebox, and swapped/mixed parts out of the new radio grill for a parts one that I had painted to match the truck. We planned to go to the city, have supper, enjoy a park and the sunshine with our son, do a few truck errands, buy groceries and then come home. Well the little fella squashed those plans after we dropped off the grill and hood pieces at the chrome shop. He had a little "freak out" and was extremely difficult to calm. My wife nursed him in a parking lot. Then we had to change him. So into Walmart we went to make it easier. Attempted to go to the park, he was unsettled again. I asked my wife should we just go straight to supper...yes she said. To McDonald's!!!! WHAT?! Then we got groceries and came home. Yes, spent the day in the car with our upset little baby boy, our gourmet supper was McDonalds and no time at the park! 😂 What a day! But some stuff has happened with the truck in the meantime. Ordered some pieces for the 1/2 ton- new tailgate, angle strips, bolt kit. Ordered a bunch of finishing touches for the 1 ton. Grill and hood pieces are being rechromed. Ordered 5/8" pulley for the alternator. Removed, adjusted, and reinstalled steering box as per manual. Removed headlight buckets from my parts truck as the trim retaining screw tab was broken on the original. Resurfaced my throttle pedal. I bought a reproduction and unfortunately with the original throttle linkage it didn't line up worth a toot. The linkage hit the floor, a very steep angle to insert the ball into the rubber socket. So I used the old one. Sandblasted it clean after removing the rubber, painted it black, cut rubber to fit, sprayed super adhesive onto pedal and rubber, mated them and then bolted the rubber down. It doesn't match the clutch and brake, but matches the floor. Plus, my throttle works as smooth as silk once more. I also got some gmc floor mats that look pretty sharp. The biggest PITA I found was aligning up the center bright work with the holes in the new rubber. Those bloody rivets for the vertical rubber seal on the vent window were a bugger. I wrecked a few (thanks CP for supplying extras) and then I got smart and welded the rivet set tool and a "drift guide" to my vice. Place rivets, line em up, squeeze, check, good. After this, it went very smoothly... Except for when I dropped a wavy pivot spring under my bench! https://photos.app.goo.gl/IrG0dKGFTwF5aLTf1Hopefully I can get the vent assemblies and side glass installed in the next few days and then the back glass. A couple of hrs here and there and with your dedication to building a concourse quality truck it'll get done.
20c up here yesterday and going to drop to -10 by mid week. I'm thinking I had my last drive yesterday, time to put it up on blocks and get my winter work scheduled for it, I have a line on 4/10 gears for a swap out this winter.

Hopefully you can nail down that 4.10. I'm still looking. A few of my leads didn't pan out. One was wrong rear end, one had gears gone, the other the hoarder wouldn't part with. I took out my motorcycle for one last cruise the other day. Pretty chilly on the way home as the sun set. I'm looking forward to driving my one ton this summer and catching up with ya! I placed them in to cut down the felt channel, chase threads, and see if it will all line up fine. Looks good so far. I will pull the vents next and install the glass and regulator before permanently installing the vents. I did measure and tried my best but I pushed the vent glass in a smidge too far into its triangle frame on the right side. I have a slight gap between the glass and the rubber. I may install a tiny gasket to make up this gap to help combat the dreaded road whistles! Joined: Apr 2002 Posts: 2,168 | My wife went to a farmers' market today with the little guy so I had the shop to myself. I was able to work on the truck steady for a bit. I got the fuel line plumbed in, vacuum line plumbed in, and the air cleaner bolted down. It was a pretty good day once I found my tubing bender and flare set. I moved it months ago while cleaning shop and couldn't find it! Tomorrow I will hook up the carb and linkages permanently, hopefully, and then begin to lay out the wiring harness. On Friday, we went to the city but my chrome hadn't been shipped up from Calgary. The chrome shop usually waits for a pile to accumulate before the make a delivery run to Edmonton. Good thing I'm not in a hurry for it. 😜 I also still have to get my heater core repaired or simply not run the heater ever. But I do think I'd like to drive it in fall when it can be quite cool. Layed out the harness, cleaned the old switches up, installed the speedometer and gauges, throttle and chuckle cables, installed the felt rings in the pedals and throttle and installed the speedo cable grommet and throttle/choke grommet. Pretty good day. Looking forward to getting wires layed in. But I'd better clean up the shop first to keep things organized.

I also need a heater core for the 55 and tried to re solder it but to no luck. We are in our Ca. winter home and even down here things are pricy.
The new core is close to $200 US bucks but like you I want a heater for the cool days. I did drive part of the last season without
the core in place and it is needed. Or else the air intake passageway needs to be sealed up. But then no fresh air or a defroster for
the cool mornings.
I do not drive it very much or for any distance since the rear pinion seal is leaking quite a lot of oil. I need to get a larger impact wrench
to remove the nut as I broke mine last summer trying to do the repair.
I enjoy reading your truck adventures this last couple of years and hopefully we will finally meet up next June at the Reynolds.

My grade 4 class is keeping me on it. Glass, fuel lines/system, now the harness! My wife is also getting excited as she can see the end, too. She keeps asking little questions about it that she never did before.
"Will you drive it in winter?" -yes, if it's nice out and the roads are clean. Heater core anyone?
"Where will we go for the first time?" - most likely just down the back road VERY slowly.
I do have an extra core in another truck so maybe I'll get lucky and it might still be ok. More than likely though it's probably toast too. These old girls were worked hard and put away wet.
That's crazy that you broke your impact on that nut! Yeesh! Who torqued that down?
Today I cleaned out the cab and I laid out the new harness beside the truck. It was all wrapped up so unwrapped it, zip tied all the bundles together according to location and called it a night. The new headlight switch that's included is very nice but I'd have to modify the dash hole to accommodate it! I don't want to wreck paint, enlarge holes, or mess with it. I'm using the old switch instead. Tomorrow's goal: mount the fuse panel on the inner firewall and rough in those bundles.
Here is the final list of tasks as far as I can see.
1. Rewire and hook up various bits.
2. Reassemble grille.
3. Run/test engine once again. Tune.
4. Get seat & door panels recovered and install.
5. Get and install new hubcaps and used clips on rims.
6. Install front clip. Hook up wires, etc.
7. Install grille and hood.
8. Tighten all hardware.
9. Get front end aligned.
10. Close hood, cross fingers, and hopefully...
I have 7 months to finish.

I got so used to seeing the clip with no lights in it that it now seems strange to actually have the holes filled in. I still need to rewire the parking lamps with my new dual filament lights. I now know why these light sockets are always rusted out and garbage up north here. They have absolutely no protection . Mud, dirt, salt, snow, they could all get into the receptacle and wreck it. I haven't terminated them yet as I need to mount the front clip and run the wire in cloth covering for aesthetics, then trim and secure. I still need to test and double check some things, but should be close to putting the front end on soon. In preparation to mount clip I have: Installed choke and throttle cables. Filled steering box with lube. Installed temperature bulb in head. Installed oil pressure line. Installed heater core and fan. Modified parking lamps for dual filament bulbs. Installed GMC logo on grille surround. Not necessary, but I couldn't resist! Replaced bulbs with 12 volt bulbs. Tonight I half installed the headliner. It is going smoothly but it sure is tough on the fingers. Tomorrow I'll finish up the back half. I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff but progress is still being made. Hey Doyle, Howie, That end of May deadline sure seems close now! I'd better get my butt in gear. I have been planning what to do to the 62 when I get home, since I made the comittment to you
that it would be at the show in June. Replace the rusted fenders and get the out of prov. inspection.
The last year 261 runs well, all brake components are new, front end is tight, it should pass.
We are off to the truck shop in Orange in a few weeks, need anything? I am going to get a 18in
six blade fan for the 55 , it runs hot on a 28 / 30c day that might help.
You two guys each have "as new" trucks mine are more "as used".
But they are all Stovebolts!

I've been working on spring hanger bushings ( 2 won't take grease) and some minor finishing that I didn't get to because I was cruising when ever I could!
I got my confirmation from Reynolds a week or so ago, did you talk to Mellisa about registering? I have emailed her and I am awaiting her response with the forms.
Today I reinstalled the driveshaft, park brake linkage, terminated the headlights, park lights and got the signal light wires ready. Alternator wires terminated at engine and hood hinges loosely bolted in along with the fender to cab braces.

Yes, the adapters came with the truck. I had never seen any like them before. I suspect they were solely for a little extra "footprint" and weren't designed for high speed. I won't be driving this truck with the adapters on at high speed. Window felts on door windows installed.
Heater motor switched out for a 12volt version.
"Voltage Regulator" Fuse Box completed and mounted. It's not hooked up yet, though.
Door access panels installed.
Right cowl vent access panel in.
Alternator bracket in process of being modified for last time.
Front fender support brackets (from behind the wheel to the lower cab front) fabricated and installed.
Hopefully be on the road by June!

Tested the heater switch I bought as well. That new 12volt motor blows hard. It's a bit loud but should heat the cab nicely.
I also began to fabricate a bracket to hold the aftermarket volt meter I will install under the dash. I'm going to mount it under the light switch using the two bolts that are on the dash under side. It will be visible, yet "hidden" and will allow for an easy tie into the gauge lights for illumination and the fuse panel.
There are 8 more school days until our Spring Break. Then, I want to hit that truck hard and get a lot done. I do have a "Honey, Do" list, but my wife has also said that she wants me to work on it steady for a few days to see how much closer to done it can get. What a gal. 😃

I still need to hook it to ignition and fuse it. What amperage should I use? (30?) I finished building my volt meter bracket. Wired it and tested. I also have to redo the fuel line from the pump to the carb as I can’t get the silly sediment bowl to seal up ( I just liked the look of it) before it enters a small inline filter. I've had my sending unit out 3 times and I'm still trying to get it to read accurate, a little bend on the float arm each time to make sure the float is free and reads more than 1/4 tank. I ran separate ground wire from the sending unit to the frame and also from the gauge to the frame. I'll know this weekend when I go to fill it up YIKES I'm not looking forward to that at 1.50 a litre for V power oh well we could be on the west coast LOL. The sediment bowl is a pain to seal I made a gasket using double thickness with Gasgacinch sealer between and seemed to work for me no leak. All that little stuff takes time and perseverance but it'll get done. You still have over 6 weeks before Reynolds! I think your helper was impressed too, I meant the young one by the way! Great job

I think I got it figured on the gas gauge front tonight. It’s working and out of the cluster. Bad ground on back side. Mine was reading similarly to yours. A slight flicker up towards about 1/4 and nothing. It pegged back and forth tonight after the shine up.
I can’t believe how fuel spikes. Irritating, especially as we are the country’s biggest supllier. We need to go Saudi style and offer our home brewed fuel at home brewed prices. Yeesh.
Perhaps I should pull the 261 and install electric motors! An electric “motor that looks like a stovebolt? Hmmm.
The sediment bowl has gone back on my parts shelf. What a pain. I think that’s part of the reason they stopped putting those on vehicles and tractors.
That 6 week window sure is closing rapidly. I still need to get it inspected and insured! I’m skipping the seats and door panels for now. If I sent them in they may get delayed and then I definitely won’t be attending.
It was fun starting up the GMC. I had my dad there and my little guy. It was special doing that together with my wife supervising.

Hopefully an easy task...😉 I had 180’F on the temperature, 30lbs of oil pressure and only a slight fuel leak that will be remedied with a quality flaring tool soon. I realized tonight that I installed the wrong oil pressure numbers in my gauge! The gauge under hood is correct, while the dash gauge reads more than 30, despite being a 30lb gauge. Oops. Oh well.😃 I do believe I can call the wiring completed. I installed the radio grill tonight as well. Rerouted to cigarette lighter wiring and tidied up the shop a bit. I like crossing things of my list. Everything worked with the truck idling. EVERYTHING! Yay! Next up: hood install/adjustment Brake bleed Clutch adjust Tune carb- it has a slight stumble off the bottom. I had a major setback tonight.
I began to bleed my brakes. I drove it in 2nd gear only on test drive and used the park brake to stop. Whilst bleeding, that bloody cheap double flaring tool has bit me in the rear. I have leaks. A lot of leaks. Slow ones, fast ones, big ones. Ugh.
So now I’m awaiting my Eastwood flaring tool so I can repair 50% of the flares I made. 🤬
Setback number 2.
I pulled the differential cover to take a peek. I plan on changing it out for a 4.10 but still haven't located one. I thought I’d just change the oil until I did. Well, there was shrapnel in the bottom of the pumpkin. A lot. Little pieces, big pieces. I am now doubting the completion goals I have set. I could drive it as is but suspect it might pile up on me somewhere along the way. Pretty frustrated tonight. Everything was going so well.
Setback 3:
Installed door lock. Of course, it’s repro and doesn’t actually have the length needed in the push rod to disengage the door striker. I darn near locked both sets of keys in the truck on top of it. The passenger window was down just enough for me to be able to grab the latch.
Tonight really was discouraging. | | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 . | | . Joined: May 2005 Posts: 8,878 | The brake lines you can fix without a lot of trouble. Also sometimes loosening, repositioning, and retightening will often fix a slow leak.
With your new flare tool don’t fully squish the second operation, form it fully enough it looks right, but don’t squish it flat. Leaving a very little give in the double flare let’s it better conform to the seat in the real fitting in use.
The rear axle you could find another center section quickly for 4.56 and probably free or real cheap which would be some improvement while you wait for the magical 4.10 to fall in your lap. You can do that swap in an evening.
Can you cut and weld to extend the latch, or mix and match old and new parts?

I solved the door latch last night. I cut a piece of stainless brake line, flattened it slightly in the vise and then hammered it down over top of the piece of push rod that was sticking out. I made the piece 1/8” longer than where the push rod stops. Works fine now.
The truck gods might be smiling on me today. I searched my local classifieds last night and found an ad that has a “60’s GM 3/4 ton rear end with a 10 bolt pattern”. Fingers crossed it’s the 4.10!
I’m looking forward to getting those brakes completed. Grrr.

However...
I dropped my seat off yesterday to get steam cleaned before installation. It was a 20 minute drive from home. I dropped it off and decided to take the back roads home. Unfamiliar roads are fun to spot old trucks hiding in the trees!
Anyway, I passed an acreage and I spotted a couple chassis with cabs sitting on them a ways off the road. I recognized the rad support from one as a 67-72 gmc. Skiiiiiiddddd. I stopped, turned around and drove into the yard. As I drove in I spotted more Chev/gmc 67-72 trucks and parts around the yard. One in particular caught my eye. A 3/4 ton with a shifter on the column... auto ? Manual? I couldn’t see from the distance.
I knocked at the front door. No answer. A newer truck was parked there but no answer. So I got out a notepad and wrote a detailed note about me, who I am, my project, my search, etc. I stuck my note in the door crack and left.
Well, I got a text message today from the fellow and he says that he very likely has that 4.10 gear set somewhere and he will let me know tomorrow!

I don’t want to pester him but I’m very eager to hear word, whatever the outcome. i picked up my seat and wrenched on the truck this evening. The seat looks really good and my wife helped me install it. She was eager to sit up at the wheel and found the position quite comfortable. I also worked on the front end. They are a little wide and fill the cab door to door but are pretty comfortable. When I was doing the metal work, I removed the original seat frame riser, built a 1” riser for the 90’s seat and then bolted it down. This set up also gives me access behind the seat and under it. It clears the gas tank, rear window, just squeezes in between the doors and also gives you tons of head room, leg room and is the perfect height to rest an elbow out the side windows. My wife noticed this when she got in. She said, “I like how roomy it is.” Compared to the original seat, it really is! With the larger seat you’d think not, but with it being lower, thinner and moved back the cab is quite comfortable now. 😃
Tonight I just sat in the truck and had a “zen moment.” And, of course, I played with the lights and horn!

In the meantime, I’ve reflared all my lines (and replaced a couple that were suddenly too short...weird) and I am now ready to bleed these brakes and hopefully I have no leaks.
I also built a door panel for the interior out of “puckboard.” The white, hard, flexible plastic that hockey rinks use. I will have it padded and covered and then installed.

I had a couple drips. I tightened them up and it all seems to be holding pressure. My pedal firms up about 1/2 through its stroke and is solid by about 3/4 to 7/8. My Dad and I spun the tires as fast as we could by hand, he hit the brakes hard and BANG! They locked up! Being that I’ve never driven one of these AD trucks with brakes of any kind, is this about normal on the pedal stroke?
Still no word on that rear gear.
