I moved my sanding and other supplies from my pal's house in order to begin and finish the body work on the front end. Almost there guys...almost there.

Paul,
I did a little looking at your dump truck. That is a very cool truck indeed! If mine comes out half as nice as yours I'll be extremely happy.

My new tires for the GMC arrived and I have them mounted on the black rims and everything sure looks pretty snazzy. I lost a little bit of tire height by going with the 215/85/16 size but it still looks pretty good.

The left door is completely body worked and ready for final prime coat and paint.
Right door needs a little more but should be done in a few hours.
Hood remains to be started.
Front fenders and splash aprons to complete.
Almost there. Keep sanding, keep sanding, ugh...

Hey Fox!, Been following your build. Awesome job! I'm building a 52 1 ton also. Has sentimental value to me. I bought it from my Uncles estate. It was the truck that I learned how to drive in. I see your in Alberta. I'm from Southern Alberta but travel up north for work. Would you mind if I stopped in some time and checked your truck out in person?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron,
No, I wouldn't mind. Just let me know via email or Pm so I can tidy up shop beforehand! Haha! July shouldn't be a problem but August might be a little hectic to schedule.

Bolters, I'm getting closer. I won't post anything more until this bloody thing is in paint!

Here we go!

https://photos.app.goo.gl/SRBpuFyD7fGxAk2t1

Tomorrow move stuff out of booth, scuff box and paint it along with aprons.
Looking good. Painting is so rewarding and goes so quickly!

By the way, I did have adequate ventilation! 😂

I wondered why I couldn't see very well...
I had supplied air going so I was good. Just being anywhere near that stuff as it dries gives a guy a headache quickly.

What kind/type of paint did you use (not the brand)?

Two-part urethane/epoxy paints are very dangerous to breathe - a high-quality mask or supplied-air respirator is required.

Polyurethane. The booth is well ventilated with intakes and exhausts, heated and supplied air. I have seen people exposed to this stuff while I was building rigs and they had a problem in some of those shops. Too many glazed eyes and unsafe practices. I'm not taking chances.

Fox,

A one-part polyurethane might not have cyanoacrylates in it.

Have you checked the MSDS for the product? What is brand and name of paint?

I checked the msds and didn't find any cyanoacrylates listed.
It is endura paint. Pretty tough stuff. Not a true automotive paint but has that listed as a use. We used it on our rigs and it holds up very well. It will last a long time on this old GMC.

I got the box painted today.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/yNfhwshOi6zM5orf2

Tomorrow I'll move box out of booth, reprime hood and doors and remove the cab from frame.

Then, reinspect pilot bushing while cab is off. Bleed brakes, prep and prime cab, reinstall!

Boy oh boy do I have some truck shuffling to do. My parts shed is very full....so is the shop....and garage. Hopefully it doesn't overflow into the house!

The next time it comes home it will be bolted down permanently!

https://photos.app.goo.gl/NrwWuXGnruFg2MvB3

I prepped the frame for tonight's box install. I also pulled the tranny while cab is off. The cheap plastic clutch alignment tool was the problem. I thought my pilot bushing was egged, turned out the disc wasn't centered hence the output turning slightly when engine running. Another check off the list. I will widen my battery tray for a 12 volt also in the next couple days.

This morning I moved the splash aprons, grill splash pan and door panels back from the booth.
Here's the jinx Martin! I shouldn't have said anything, but at least it's not the box...
Sanded down the cab this afternoon in prep for top coat and discovered a couple tiny flaws on the roof that I want to skim before paint. No one will ever see it but it will bug me if I don't! So, cab paint is delayed a tiny bit more.
I installed the core support and rubber tonight. I used a rubber gasket material with adhesive backing along the top frame rail to prevent inner fender squeaks. Hopefully it works well. It sure is nice installing pieces that aren't rusted, fit beautifully and look nice to boot!

The last few days' progress. She's a big black beast now!

https://goo.gl/photos/gYgsD9DtuGZM3EL98

Painting the cab proved to be a challenge. With all the little nooks and crannies, it was difficult to see them all. I
Think it turned out pretty nice. I killed the lights and did a few double and triple checks with an LED light to find the "thin" spots. I think I got them all.

By the way Martin, you called it. I had to take the box off to get the cab on as my hoist was maxed out! 😉😎

Started bolting on stuff today... Shiny stuff!

https://goo.gl/photos/Zr8GTa38JvpkxZd47

I scuffed down the dually running board this afternoon and layed down the bed liner. It went well. Still have to finish the under side but I might do that Thursday. Tomorrow I pick up more paint, varnish for the wood, more little hvlp filters. Thursday I am taking in the old exhaust head pipe to get a new one bent and then some extra tubing and a new muffler so I can weld out the exhaust system.

Getting ahead of myself but I installed the splash aprons and running boards. I do need to pull them off in order to install the rubber seal that runs between the board and the cab underside.
I applied a second coat of varnish to the wood.
Exhaust is delayed as I intended to use that trip to the city to pick up a window that was on order for our smashed back window from a storm. The window was delayed so I put off the exhaust for when the window is in.
I ordered all the rubber for the cab along with a bunch of other goodies. I was going to use my old stuff but it's just not nice enough now to reinstall. However, I will be selling it locally to offset the cost of parts. Some of it is usable though 😀

https://goo.gl/photos/HrRX4b4go3WKAcTF7

Looking forward to parts arriving so I can bolt on the fenders, tailgate and extensions! Oh boy. BLAM BLAM BLAM! Stuff is flying out of the parts shed and onto the truck!

I always liked Christmas!

Tailgate installed tonight, latches ready to go in, radio delete plate installed, top cowl vent installed, sealed and adjusted. I had a lot of fun opening and closing it. It was satisfying to hear the click, click, click. Fully open, fully seated. Nice! I put very thin rubber along the back edge of the running board as a gasket to prevent squeaks. It looks really good and I suspect it will do a great job. I removed and reinstalled the heater vent ducts under the dash as I installed them backwards. I love all the pictures I took while disassembling! I also cleaned up the shop. That last one really was needed as I was running out of bench area because of so many little jobs on the

https://goo.gl/photos/c8frgCWfu8Hdp8xv6

This is how she sits tonight. I've never had this much fun wrenching on any of my trucks before! My wife had to tell me to come in as I easily lose track of time.

Update on paint...just front fenders and hood to paint and this old girl is PAINTED!

Thanks Jim. It's nice seeing progress.
Today's highlights:
1. Coat 3 on the bed wood. 2 to go.
2. Sanded down right rear fender and hood and repainted as I had 1 run on the fender and a "heavy" spot on the hood's nose that didn't look right.
3. Cleaned up booth.
4. Installed more sound deadening material in the cab. It really makes a huge difference.
5. Created a gasket for the tranny cover and secured it in place.
6. Installed my rebuilt vacuum wiper motor and linkages.
WHAT A PAIN!! I have no gauges, heat ducting, seats, steering column or radio installed and it was a chore. I also consider myself quite flexible for a fella. I can't imagine doing that with everything installed. Good grief. Hopefully it works as well in the truck as it did on the bench.

Bed wood is ready to install tomorrow but ALAS! I told my Dad he could help with the install but he is away camping for 4 days now. Oh well, I'd better wait as it is important to him. I can't wait!
I built my exhaust this afternoon as I had to take a couple hour break and watch the solar eclipse with my wife, relatives and neighbors who were stopping in to see the truck and visit. It took a lot longer than I expected to do the piping as I had about 12 visitors today.

Today was a VERY expensive day:
I ordered a bunch of parts from LMC and CP. $1000!
I took my old glass in to have new pieces recut. I thought it was quite reasonable but still it was a touch on the wallet. $440 for all 7 pieces.
Got insulation for the cab. $140 (that includes a bunch of other stuff from Home Depot that doesn't count towards the truck).
Got groceries. Was pretty low on milk! And then I think I broke my pinky toe but smashing it on a cart wheel with only flip flops on! I had to wrap a napkin around it as I was bleeding all over the place. Limp, limp, limp. Boy, was I mad!

Tonight's progress:
Bed wood install started. Just the outer boards and bolts. Those bolts that go down on top of the spring hangar were a bear to get the nut on! I stopped for Papa's sake; he's home Saturday.
Picked up and install the rear right fender after its 3rd time in the paint booth! Yeesh. Looks good now.
Installed welting.
Installed more sound deadener with my cat watching!
It was a fun day.

Today I went to the school and started getting the classroom ready. Worked at that for a few hours and then wrenched on the truck in the late afternoon.

Today I finished installing the sound deadener in the cab and then the insides of the doors. I then installed the door seal that runs along the outer door lip. I didn't enjoy working with that weatherstripping glue let me tell you. Sticky, bloody mess even when trying my darnedest to be clean and tidy. After the seal set up for a little while I decided to mount the doors and set the gap. I put on the strikers and loosely adjusted and got the doors closer and closer. I reinstalled the old inside door handles so I could open and close the doors. I set the doors where I was happy and then closed them up to help compress the seal a bit. It was very satisfying to hear the door solidly shut with no clangingI The rebuilt latches, strikers, seals and sound deadening matting have done wonders! I was a bit nervous about hanging the doors by myself but it went very smoothly. There are no windows installed so they are "light". I opened the hinges right up, got bolts and hardware ready, picked up door on the inside and then sat on the running board with the door on my knees and slid the door onto the hinge. No problems at all. It went very well today.

It looks more and more truck like every day.

Tomorrow, hopefully finish class room and then bed wood install if my wife doesn't go into labour! She was due yesterday with our first child (a boy) and I'm looking forward to getting my first "apprentice/wrench fetcher!" It's fun teaching my nieces and nephews about things; I imagine it will be even more rewarding when it's our own and not the "rentals 😉" from my siblings!

I know! It's going to be exciting and terrifying at the same time. Parenting, work, hobbies; I have been hitting the truck hard lately and it will slow considerably soon. Today my nieces were over. One is 2 years old and the other is 2 months. While the elder one played in the backyard, I had the baby in her little seat in the back of the truck while I cut insulation. It was neat having them there.

I began to install the insulation in the cab over top of the sound deadener this morning. Looks and sounds good so far. I scraped off some of the excess glue that squeezed out on the door seal.

Last night I went out to the farm and picked up the floor pan for the 70 C10 cab that will be undergoing extensive surgery this winter.
