Finally got to spend some more time on the 3100 and pulled the head today.
The cylinders looked OK, didn't see any large scrapes, scratches, gouges or holes but there is some surface rust on cyl's 2 & 4. The head was heavier and bulkier than I expected so I didn't lift it off cleanly. That said it's hard to say if the deposits 6 rusty water all around cyls 5 & 6 was there before or after the pull.
The head gasket does look corroded on 5 & 6 and it could be blown ( on the gasket to head side)
Theres alot of carbon and other deposits around all the intake valves, some had large chunks that "may" have been effecting the compression.
The exhaust valves on every cyl except 3 look burnt to my naked eye.
The pistons turn over easily and theres no unusual noises when I spin the engine via the starter so it could be that the lower end "may" still be servicable.
Heres some pics, opinions are encouraged grin
