After reading up in the shop manual, it seems the correct way to set the valves is after the engine has warmed up to operating temps. Since that'll be hard to do in my case I did some searching here it seems the consensus is to add approx .002" to set the clearances cold. I also downloaded a couple handy instructions that'll I try soon. I gotta say this 216 has an unusual valve layout grin
I gave each valve stem a good bath of CB Blaster and decided to squirt 2 good shots of oil per cylinder and let it sit a couple days like that. I also gave the entire valve train a good bath in oil (some 10w30 I had sitting around).

Unfortunately theres a swap meet this weekend involving my "other" running project so my time lately is getting it into good interstate running condition and bringing a shine to the few spots that will grin
I do hope to play w/the 3100 some this weekend tho.
I did bring the engine up to #1 compression stroke and both valves have some wiggle room so the valves aren't tight on #1 anyways.

Don & Zaczac, good to hear y'all could get that old iron running again. Both of your experiences sound just like mine so I'm motivated to try both.
Zaczac, what was the name of that magic starting fluid again? grin

Jerry, pm sent.
