Is the spark a pretty blue color, or orange in color? Needs to be blue and strong. Orange in color just won't cut it.
Sounds like timing is too slow to me, or points aren't quite right yet.
Should fire up for a few seconds on gas poured down the throat. Unless you are pouring too much. Or not enough.
Using Hotrod Lincolns method of timing the distributor should get it to start up, then you can see how close it is.
