Get the shop manual. I must have done the timing 10 times following other peoples instructions before got the guts to dive into what I thought was a complex write-up on a complicated process. After reading the manual I got it done in a matter of minutes. Turns out there are actually three marks on the flywheel (the bb, a triangle and the letters "TDC", as I recall). They're all near each other but it makes a difference which one you use for what and the one I was commonly told to use to get things started was incorrect. To keep things straight I marked them with different color grease pencils then used a timing light to dial it in.
