I have put my adapter on several 261 and have seen no difference in the block thickness.
Second, the 261 balancer will work fine if you use a 1953-54 pump with a 3/8" belt. It is only the 1955-62 passenger car balancer you should not use.
I have had no reports of overheating with this setup if the timing is set correct.
