I never installed this kind of adapter plate, but looking at the photo, it looks like you used enough sealant, but may have torqued it tight before it dried.
I would go with the most durable high temp gasket sealant, apply just enough but not too much to both surfaces, let dry until it just stops sticking to the finger and then bolt it down and let dry over night at least before starting the engine.
Never ever get discouraged.
