That sounds like a handy tool to have. I remember the screwdriver method from years ago. Not too kind on the screwdriver if I remember correctly.
Some questions:
What gauge wire do you recommend? Something fairly heavy?
The alligator clips connect to the posts on the solenoid on one end and I hold the other ends. Won't there be a nasty jolt when I touch the wires together?
