The factory regulator/generator ground wire size is #18. All it has to carry is the current to operate the field coils, typically a square wave DC signal at less than 5 amps. The charge current grounding is done through the generator housing and the engine block. Since the regulator is mounted to the body, a dedicated ground between the generator housing and the regulator base assures that rusty body metal does not become the only path for field current to follow.
